Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively breach obstacles using explosives in a controlled environment. It covers the planning, preparation, and execution of explosive breaching operations, ensuring compliance with South African health, safety, and explosives regulations. Successful learners will be able to assess obstacles, select appropriate charges, and implement breaching procedures to achieve operational objectives.

Target Audience

This course is designed for security professionals, military personnel, and explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) operators who require competency in explosive breaching techniques. It is also suitable for individuals in specialized law enforcement or private security roles where obstacle breaching is a operational requirement.

Prerequisites

Learners must be in possession of a valid explosive competency certificate as per South African Explosives Act requirements. Additionally, learners must be physically fit and medically cleared to work with explosives.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Explosive Breaching

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of explosive breaching and its applications.
• Identify different types of explosives and initiation systems.
• Recognize safety protocols and legal requirements.
• Describe the physics of explosives and blast effects.

• Introduction to explosive breaching: history and concepts
• Types of explosives: military, commercial, and improvised
• Initiation systems: detonators, fuses, and firing devices
• Safety procedures: handling, storage, and transport
• Legal and regulatory framework in South Africa
• Physics of explosions: overpressure, fragmentation, and shock waves
• Breaching charges: shape, size, and placement basics
• Risk assessment and mitigation strategies

Day 2: Explosive Materials and Handling

Objectives:
• Differentiate between various explosive compounds and their properties.
• Demonstrate safe handling and storage of explosives.
• Calculate charge weights for different materials.
• Understand compatibility and stability of explosives.

Topics:
• Explosive compounds: RDX, PETN, TNT, ANFO, and dynamite
• Properties: sensitivity, brisance, velocity of detonation
• Safety in handling: personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Storage requirements: magazines, temperature, and humidity control
• Transportation regulations and procedures
• Charge calculation: formulas and practical examples
• Compatibility: mixing explosives and inert materials
• Inspection and disposal of deteriorated explosives

Day 3: Breaching Techniques and Charge Design

Objectives:
• Design charges for different target materials (wood, steel, concrete).
• Apply breaching techniques: linear, shaped, and cutting charges.
• Calculate standoff distances and charge placement.
• Understand the effects of charge geometry on breaching.

• Charge design principles: linear shaped charges, cutting charges
• Breaching wood: charge placement and sizing
• Breaching steel: thermal and explosive cutting
• Breaching concrete: cratering and demolition
• Standoff distance: calculation and effects
• Charge geometry: length, width, and angle
• Multiple charges: sequencing and simultaneity
• Post-blast analysis and assessment

Day 4: Initiation Systems and Firing Circuits

Objectives:
• Assemble and test firing circuits.
• Differentiate between electrical and non-electrical initiation.
• Troubleshoot common initiation failures.
• Apply safety procedures during circuit assembly.

• Electrical initiation: blasting machines, wires, and continuity testing
• Non-electrical initiation: shock tube, detonating cord, and fuse
• Circuit design: series, parallel, and hybrid configurations
• Testing and troubleshooting: continuity, resistance, and shorts
• Safety interlocks and remote firing
• Timing devices: delays and synchronization
• Redundant systems and fail-safe measures
• Record keeping and documentation

Day 5: Practical Application and Simulation

Objectives:
• Apply breaching techniques in simulated scenarios.
• Conduct risk assessments and safety briefings.
• Execute a breaching operation from planning to initiation.
• Evaluate blast outcomes and adjust techniques.

• Scenario planning: target selection and charge design
• Risk assessment: site survey and hazard identification
• Safety briefing: roles, responsibilities, and emergency procedures
• Charge preparation: cutting, placing, and priming
• Firing circuit assembly and testing
• Initiation and observation

Day 6: Integration, Assessment, and Certification

Objectives:
• Integrate all skills in a comprehensive breaching exercise.
• Demonstrate proficiency in charge design and initiation.
• Complete a written and practical assessment.
• Understand maintenance and record-keeping requirements.

• Comprehensive exercise: multiple target breaching

Overview

Practical sessions are essential for learners to safely handle explosives, design charges, and execute breaching operations under supervision. These hands-on exercises reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop critical skills in charge assembly, firing circuit setup, and post-blast analysis.

Practical Activities
  • Explosive Handling and Safety — Learners practice safe handling, transport, and storage of explosives in a controlled environment, including PPE use and emergency procedures. (4h)
  • Charge Design and Assembly — Learners design and assemble charges for wood, steel, and concrete targets, calculating charge weights and placement. (6h)
  • Firing Circuit Assembly and Testing — Learners build and test electrical and non-electrical firing circuits, troubleshooting faults and ensuring reliability. (4h)
  • Simulated Breaching Operation — Teams plan and execute a breaching operation on a simulated target, including risk assessment, charge placement, and initiation. (6h)
  • Comprehensive Breaching Exercise and Assessment — Learners complete a final practical assessment involving multiple target breaching, demonstrating all skills from planning to post-blast analysis. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
