Description

This course equips learners with the competencies to safely and effectively apply robotics in bomb disposal operations. It covers the selection, setup, and operation of robotic systems for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD), enabling learners to minimize risk to personnel and the public.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Robotics for Bomb Disposal

Objectives:
• Understand the role of robotics in bomb disposal operations
• Identify key components of a bomb disposal robot
• Explain safety protocols for robot deployment
• Describe the basic principles of remote control and teleoperation
• Recognize the legal and ethical considerations in EOD robotics

• Overview of bomb disposal and EOD operations
• History and evolution of EOD robotics
• Types of bomb disposal robots (tracked, wheeled, aerial)
• Key subsystems: manipulator arm, cameras, sensors, mobility platforms
• Safety procedures and risk assessment
• Introduction to remote control systems
• Legal framework and rules of engagement
• Case studies of robot-assisted EOD missions

Day 2: Robot Systems and Components

Objectives:
• Identify and describe the function of each major robot component
• Understand power systems and battery management
• Explain communication links and data transmission
• Describe sensor payloads (visual, thermal, chemical, radiological)
• Perform basic pre-deployment checks

Topics:
• Detailed breakdown of manipulator arms and grippers
• Drive systems: tracks, wheels, and suspension
• Power sources: batteries, fuel cells, and charging protocols
• Communication systems: radio frequency, line-of-sight, and relay
• Sensor integration: cameras, IR, X-ray, CBRNE detectors
• Control interfaces: joystick, tablet, and wearable controllers
• Maintenance and pre-mission inspection
• Troubleshooting common faults

Day 3: Teleoperation and Control Systems

Objectives:
• Operate a bomb disposal robot using standard control interfaces
• Navigate obstacles and confined spaces remotely
• Manipulate objects using the robotic arm
• Interpret video and sensor feedback for situational awareness
• Apply emergency stop and recovery procedures

• Teleoperation fundamentals: latency, bandwidth, and feedback
• Control modes: direct, semi-autonomous, and supervised
• Driving techniques: turning, climbing, and traversing terrain
• Manipulator control: pick-and-place, cutting, and gripping
• Camera views and multi-screen display management
• Emergency procedures: lost link, battery low, mechanical failure
• Practice scenarios: navigating through obstacles
• Debrief and performance assessment

Day 4: Sensor Integration and Threat Assessment

Objectives:
• Set up and calibrate various sensors on the robot
• Interpret sensor data to identify potential threats
• Use X-ray and other imaging to assess suspicious objects
• Detect chemical, biological, radiological, and explosive hazards
• Document findings and communicate threat levels

• Sensor types: visual, thermal, acoustic, vibration
• X-ray systems: operation and image interpretation
• CBRNE sensors: chemical sniffers, radiation detectors, biological samplers
• Data fusion and display integration
• Threat assessment protocols and decision matrices
• Communication of findings to command team
• Record-keeping and evidence preservation
• Practical exercises: sensor calibration and data collection

Day 5: Advanced Manipulation and Tools

Objectives:
• Operate specialized tools mounted on the robot arm
• Disable or disrupt improvised explosive devices (IEDs) remotely
• Use water disrupter, hook-and-line, and other disruptors
• Apply safe handling techniques for hazardous materials
• Perform precision tasks under time constraints

• Overview of EOD tools: disruptors, cutters, grabs, and hooks
• Mounting and operating a water disrupter cannon
• Using hook-and-line to open containers or move objects
• Precision cutting and drilling with robotic arm
• Handling suspicious packages and evidence
• Techniques for rendering safe IEDs remotely
• Safety considerations with disruptors and explosives
• Practical drills: disruptor placement and activation

Day 6: Mission Planning and Tactical Integration

Objectives:
• Develop a mission plan for robot-assisted EOD operations
• Coordinate with human operators and support teams
• Conduct risk assessments and contingency planning
• Execute a simulated mission from start to finish
• Debrief and analyze mission performance

• Mission planning process: reconnaissance, objectives, routes
• Risk assessment matrices and mitigation strategies
• Integration with human EOD teams: roles and communication
• Contingency planning: failure modes and emergency responses
• Simulated mission scenarios: building clearance, vehicle inspection

Day 7: Final Assessment and Certification

Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to gain hands-on experience with bomb disposal robots, control systems, sensors, and disruptor tools. Through supervised exercises and simulated missions, learners develop the muscle memory and decision-making skills required for safe and effective EOD operations.

Practical Activities
  • Basic Robot Operation and Navigation — Learners practice driving the robot through obstacle courses, navigating confined spaces, and performing basic maneuvers under remote control. (6h)
  • Manipulator Arm and Tool Operation — Learners use the robotic arm to pick up, move, and manipulate objects, and operate disruptor tools such as a water cannon and hook-and-line. (6h)
  • Sensor Calibration and Threat Detection — Learners calibrate and deploy various sensors (X-ray, thermal, CBRNE), interpret data, and identify simulated threats in controlled scenarios. (4h)
  • Integrated Mission Simulation — Learners plan and execute a full EOD mission, including reconnaissance, robot deployment, threat assessment, disruption, and evidence recovery, with team coordination. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
