Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Electronic Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the fundamental principles of electronic systems.
• Identify common electronic components and their functions.
• Explain basic circuit theory and signal flow.

Topics:
• Overview of electronic systems in industry.
• Basic electronic components: resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors.
• Circuit theory: voltage, current, resistance, Ohm's Law.
• Signal types: analog vs digital signals.

Day 2: Power Supplies and Regulation

Objectives:
• Describe the operation of power supply circuits.
• Explain voltage regulation and filtering.
• Troubleshoot common power supply issues.

Topics:
• AC to DC conversion: rectifiers (half-wave, full-wave).
• Filtering circuits: capacitors, inductors.
• Voltage regulators: linear and switching regulators.
• Power supply protection: fuses, circuit breakers.

Day 3: Amplifiers and Signal Processing

Objectives:
• Understand amplifier classes and configurations.
• Analyze operational amplifier circuits.
• Apply filtering techniques for signal conditioning.

Topics:
• Amplifier basics: gain, bandwidth, classes (A, B, AB, C).
• Operational amplifiers: inverting, non-inverting, summing amplifiers.
• Active filters: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass.
• Signal conditioning: amplification, attenuation, isolation.

Day 4: Digital Electronics and Logic Circuits

Objectives:
• Explain binary number systems and logic gates.
• Design combinational and sequential logic circuits.
• Implement simple digital systems.

Topics:
• Binary, hexadecimal, and BCD number systems.
• Logic gates: AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR.
• Combinational logic: adders, multiplexers, decoders.
• Sequential logic: flip-flops, counters, shift registers.

Day 5: Sensors, Actuators, and Interfacing

Objectives:
• Describe common sensors and actuators used in industry.
• Interface sensors and actuators with electronic circuits.
• Understand signal conditioning for sensor outputs.

Topics:
• Sensors: temperature, pressure, proximity, light.
• Actuators: relays, solenoids, motors.
• Interfacing: analog-to-digital converters (ADC), digital-to-analog converters (DAC).
• Signal conditioning: amplification, filtering, linearization.

Day 6: System Integration and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Integrate electronic subsystems into a complete system.
• Apply systematic troubleshooting techniques.
• Demonstrate safe working practices.

Topics:
• System integration: combining power supply, processing, and I/O.
• Troubleshooting methodology: visual inspection, measurement, isolation.
• Use of test equipment: multimeter, oscilloscope, logic analyzer.
• Safety practices: lockout/tagout, ESD precautions.

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential to reinforce theoretical concepts and develop skills in assembling, testing, and troubleshooting electronic circuits. Learners will build and analyze circuits using breadboards and test equipment, culminating in a mini-project that integrates multiple subsystems.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Component Identification and Circuit Assembly — Learners identify various electronic components and assemble a simple DC circuit on a breadboard. They measure voltage and current using a multimeter. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Power Supply Construction — Learners build a regulated DC power supply including rectifier, filter, and voltage regulator. They test output under load and troubleshoot faults. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Operational Amplifier Circuits — Learners design and test inverting and non-inverting amplifier circuits using op-amps. They measure gain and frequency response. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Digital Logic Circuits — Learners construct combinational and sequential logic circuits using ICs. They verify truth tables and observe clocked operations. (4h)
  • Practical 5: Sensor Interfacing and System Integration — Learners interface a temperature sensor and an LED actuator with a microcontroller (Arduino). They write simple code to read sensor data and control the LED. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
