Basic Domestic Infrastructure Maintenance in Conservation Areas Training

SAQA US 252465 | NQF 2 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the practical skills to perform basic maintenance of domestic infrastructure within conservation areas, ensuring that all work aligns with environmental sustainability and safety standards. Participants will learn to identify common infrastructure issues, apply appropriate repair techniques, and maintain records in compliance with conservation area protocols.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and report common defects in domestic infrastructure within a conservation area.
  • Apply basic repair techniques to maintain fencing, water systems, and structures.
  • Use appropriate tools and materials safely and efficiently.
  • Demonstrate adherence to conservation area policies and environmental best practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and materials used.
  • Evaluate the impact of maintenance work on the surrounding ecosystem.

Target Audience

This course is designed for maintenance staff, field rangers, and community members working in or around conservation areas who are responsible for basic upkeep of domestic facilities such as fencing, water points, and pathways.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

• Identify common types of infrastructure found in conservation settings
• Recognise environmental and heritage sensitivities affecting maintenance
• Apply basic safety principles for working in conservation areas

Topics:
• Overview of conservation areas: types and regulations
• Types of domestic infrastructure: water, waste, energy, structures
• Environmental impact considerations
• Heritage and cultural sensitivity
• Basic safety: PPE, wildlife awareness, emergency procedures

Day 2: Water and Sanitation Systems

Objectives:
• Describe components of water supply and sanitation systems in remote areas
• Perform basic inspection and maintenance of water tanks and pipes
• Identify common issues such as leaks and blockages
• Understand water conservation and greywater management

Topics:

• Borehole and pump basics
• Pipework, fittings, and valve maintenance
• Septic tanks and conservancy tanks
• Greywater systems and water-saving fixtures
• Leak detection and repair

Day 3: Energy Systems and Electrical Infrastructure

Objectives:
• Identify components of off-grid energy systems (solar, generator)
• Perform basic checks on solar panels, batteries, and inverters
• Understand electrical safety in damp and remote environments
• Execute routine maintenance on generators and small appliances

Topics:
• Solar photovoltaic systems: panels, charge controllers, batteries
• Generator operation and maintenance

Topics:
• Timber and masonry structures: inspection and repair
• Roofing materials and leak repair
• Doors, windows, and lock maintenance
• Painting and surface protection
• Termite and rodent prevention
• Fire safety: extinguishers, alarms, and evacuation

Day 5: Integrated Maintenance Planning and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Develop a simple maintenance schedule for a conservation facility
• Apply knowledge to a simulated inspection and repair scenario
• Document maintenance activities and report issues
• Demonstrate safe work practices throughout

Topics:
• Maintenance planning: checklists and schedules
• Record-keeping and reporting
• Spare parts inventory and procurement
• Case studies: common failures in conservation infrastructure
• Final practical assessment: inspect and repair a simulated system

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential to develop competence in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing domestic infrastructure in conservation areas. Learners will work with actual water, electrical, and structural components in a simulated conservation setting, under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Water System Inspection and Repair — Learners inspect a rainwater harvesting system, identify leaks, and perform basic repairs on pipes and fittings. (4h)
  • Solar PV System Maintenance — Learners perform routine checks on a small solar system: clean panels, check battery voltage, and inspect wiring. (4h)
  • Structural Repair and Pest Prevention — Learners repair a damaged wooden door frame and apply anti-termite treatment to adjacent soil. (4h)
  • Integrated Maintenance Simulation — Teams conduct a full site inspection, identify faults across water, energy, and structures, and complete a maintenance report. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
