Fire Ignition Control and Extinguishing in Conservation Areas Training

SAQA US 252461 | NQF 2 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely ignite controlled fires, manage fire behavior, and extinguish wildfires in conservation areas. It emphasizes ecological fire management principles, legal compliance, and safety protocols to protect biodiversity and infrastructure.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply fire behavior principles to plan and execute controlled ignitions in conservation areas.
  • Demonstrate safe use of firefighting equipment and techniques to control and extinguish fires.
  • Analyze environmental factors (weather, fuel load, topography) to predict fire spread and adjust tactics.
  • Evaluate post-fire impacts and implement rehabilitation measures to restore ecological balance.
  • Implement legal and organizational protocols for fire incident reporting and documentation.

Target Audience

Conservation area managers, field rangers, fire protection officers, and environmental practitioners responsible for fire management in natural reserves, parks, or protected areas.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners must be physically fit and able to work in outdoor conditions.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fire Behaviour and Prevention in Conservation Areas

Objectives:
• Understand the ecological role of fire in conservation areas.
• Identify causes and contributing factors of unwanted fires.
• Apply fire prevention strategies and risk assessment techniques.
• Describe fire behaviour principles including fuel, weather, and topography.

Topics:
• Ecological role of fire in fynbos, savanna, and grassland biomes.
• Causes of wildfires: lightning, human activity, and arson.
• Fire danger rating systems and indices.
• Fuel types and load assessment.
• Weather factors: wind, temperature, humidity, and drought.
• Topography and its influence on fire spread.
• Fire prevention measures: firebreaks, controlled burns, and public education.
• Introduction to fire suppression equipment and PPE.

Day 2: Fire Suppression Techniques and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Demonstrate safe use of hand tools and water-based suppression equipment.
• Execute direct and indirect attack methods.
• Coordinate team-based fire suppression in conservation terrain.
• Apply mop-up and patrol procedures to prevent re-ignition.
• Evaluate post-fire impacts and reporting requirements.

Topics:
• Hand tools: beaters, rakes, shovels, and backpack pumps.
• Water delivery systems: hoses, nozzles, pumps, and water sources.
• Direct attack: flame beating and water application.
• Indirect attack: firebreaks and backburning.
• Safety protocols: lookout, communication, escape routes, and safety zones.
• Mop-up techniques: hot spots, stump holes, and duff layers.
• Patrol and monitoring after containment.
• Post-fire assessment: severity, soil erosion risk, and rehabilitation.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential to develop proficiency in fire suppression equipment and tactics. Learners will practice using hand tools and water delivery systems in simulated wildland fire scenarios, focusing on safety and effective teamwork.

Practical Activities
  • Hand Tool Familiarisation and Use — Learners practice using beaters, rakes, and backpack pumps to extinguish small controlled fires under supervision. (2h)
  • Water Delivery System Setup and Operation — Learners assemble and operate a portable pump, lay hose, and use nozzles to deliver water to a simulated fire. (2h)
  • Simulated Wildfire Suppression Exercise — Teams execute a coordinated attack on a small controlled burn using a combination of hand tools and water, then perform mop-up. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
