Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify, assess, and implement effective soil erosion control and prevention measures. It covers the causes and consequences of soil erosion, as well as practical techniques for combating erosion in agricultural, construction, and natural settings. The course aims to promote sustainable land management practices in line with South African environmental standards.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Soil Erosion

Objectives:
• Define soil erosion and its environmental and economic impacts.
• Identify the main types and causes of soil erosion.
• Explain the factors influencing soil erodibility.
• Describe the global and South African context of soil degradation.

Topics:
• What is soil erosion: definitions and concepts
• Types of erosion: water, wind, tillage, and mass movement
• Causes: natural vs. anthropogenic factors
• Factors affecting erosion: rainfall, soil type, slope, vegetation
• Impacts on agriculture, water quality, and infrastructure
• Overview of soil erosion in South Africa

Day 2: Erosion Assessment and Monitoring

Objectives:
• Apply field methods to assess erosion severity.
• Use erosion prediction models (e.g., USLE/RUSLE).
• Interpret soil loss tolerance levels.
• Set up simple monitoring plots.

Topics:
• Field indicators of erosion: rills, gullies, pedestals
• Measuring soil loss: erosion pins, sediment traps
• Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) basics
• Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) factors
• GIS and remote sensing for erosion mapping
• Setting monitoring objectives and protocols

Day 3: Prevention Methods – Vegetative and Agronomic

Objectives:
• Select appropriate cover crops and conservation tillage.
• Design contour farming and strip cropping layouts.
• Implement mulching and crop rotation strategies.
• Explain the role of agroforestry in erosion control.

Topics:
• Conservation tillage: no-till, reduced till
• Cover crops and green manures
• Contour farming and strip cropping
• Mulching materials and application
• Crop rotation and residue management
• Agroforestry systems: alley cropping, shelterbelts

Day 4: Structural Control Measures

Objectives:
• Design and locate terraces, waterways, and check dams.
• Construct and maintain grassed waterways.
• Install erosion control blankets and matting.
• Evaluate structural options for different landscapes.

• Terrace types: bench, broadbase, and diversion
• Grassed waterways: design and maintenance
• Check dams: rock, log, and gabion
• Erosion control blankets and coir logs
• Gully control structures
• Maintenance and cost considerations

Day 5: Integrated Erosion Control Planning and Legislation

Objectives:
• Develop an integrated erosion control plan for a farm.
• Comply with relevant South African legislation (e.g., Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act).
• Combine vegetative, agronomic, and structural methods.
• Present and justify a management plan.

Topics:
• Integrated catchment management principles
• South African legislation: CARA, NEMA, water acts
• Erosion control planning process
• Combining methods for sustainable solutions
• Case studies: successful projects in SA
• Monitoring and adaptive management

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners will apply theoretical knowledge through field-based exercises: assessing erosion, installing control measures, and developing a plan. Practicals reinforce observation, measurement, and implementation skills.

Practical Activities
  • Field Erosion Assessment — Learners visit an eroded site, identify erosion types, measure rill/gully dimensions, and record soil and vegetation data. (4h)
  • Vegetative Control Measures Demonstration — Learners practice marking contour lines, laying out strip cropping plots, and applying mulch on a demonstration plot. (4h)
  • Structural Control Construction — Learners construct a small check dam using rocks/logs and install an erosion control blanket on a simulated slope. (4h)
  • Integrated Erosion Control Plan — In groups, learners develop an erosion control plan for a given farm scenario, combining vegetative and structural methods, and present it. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
