This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage clarifier mud processing and disposal in water treatment and industrial settings. Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Clarifier Mud and Regulatory Framework

Objectives:
• Define clarifier mud and its origins in water and wastewater treatment.
• Understand the environmental and operational importance of mud management.
• Identify relevant South African legislation and SAQA unit standards.
• Describe the basic principles of sedimentation and clarification.
• Outline the scope of the 8-day training programme.

• Environmental impacts of improper mud disposal.
• South African regulatory framework (NEM:WA, water use licences).
• Introduction to SAQA Unit Standard 114325.

• Safety basics in mud handling operations.

Day 2: Mud Properties, Sampling, and Characterisation

Objectives:
• Explain physical and chemical properties of clarifier mud.
• Perform representative sampling techniques.
• Conduct basic characterisation tests (solids content, pH, viscosity).
• Interpret characterisation results for process decisions.
• Document sampling and testing according to standard procedures.

• Physical properties: density, particle size, settleability.
• Chemical properties: pH, alkalinity, metal content.
• Sampling methods: grab, composite, and continuous.
• Laboratory tests: total solids, suspended solids, volatile solids.
• Interpretation of test results.

Day 3: Mud Thickening and Dewatering Technologies

Objectives:
• Differentiate between thickening and dewatering processes.
• Describe gravity thickening, flotation, and mechanical thickeners.
• Explain dewatering using centrifuges, belt presses, and filter presses.
• Select appropriate technology based on mud characteristics.
• Calculate performance metrics (solids capture, cake solids).

• Principles of thickening: sedimentation, flotation.
• Gravity thickeners: design and operation.
• Dissolved air flotation (DAF) thickeners.
• Mechanical thickeners: rotary drum, gravity belt.
• Dewatering equipment: centrifuge, belt filter press, recessed plate filter press.

Day 4: Mud Stabilisation and Conditioning

• Explain the need for stabilisation to reduce odour and pathogens.
• Describe lime stabilisation, aerobic digestion, and anaerobic digestion.
• Apply chemical conditioning to improve dewaterability.
• Monitor stabilisation parameters (pH, temperature, volatile solids reduction).
• Ensure compliance with Class A or Class B biosolids standards.

• Objectives of stabilisation: odour control, pathogen reduction.
• Lime stabilisation: dosing, mixing, and contact time.
• Aerobic digestion: process theory and operational control.
• Anaerobic digestion: biogas production and digestate quality.

• Implement corrective actions for process upsets.

Day 7: Health, Safety, and Environmental Management

Objectives:
• Identify hazards in mud handling (H2S, confined spaces, chemicals).
• Apply risk assessment methodologies (JSA, HAZOP).
• Implement control measures to mitigate risks.
• Understand emergency response for spills and gas releases.
• Comply with OHS Act and environmental regulations.

• Complete a summative assessment (written and practical).
• Develop a personal action plan for workplace implementation.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
