Day 1: Introduction to Laboratory Apparatus and Equipment

• Introduction to basic equipment: balances, pH meters, hot plates.
• Safety symbols and hazard identification.
• Laboratory documentation and SOPs.
• Equipment logbooks and maintenance schedules.

Day 2: Glassware and Measuring Techniques

Objectives:
• Differentiate types of laboratory glassware and their uses.
• Demonstrate correct techniques for measuring volumes.
• Apply principles of accuracy and precision in measurements.
• Perform proper cleaning and care of glassware.

Topics:
• Volumetric glassware: beakers, flasks, pipettes, burettes.
• Graduated cylinders and volumetric flasks.
• Reading meniscus and avoiding parallax error.
• Calibration of pipettes and micropipettes.
• Cleaning procedures: detergents, acids, safety.
• Storage and handling of glassware to prevent breakage.

Day 3: Balances and Weighing Techniques

Objectives:
• Operate different types of balances safely.
• Perform accurate weighing using proper techniques.
• Calibrate a balance and troubleshoot common issues.
• Apply correct weighing practices for different sample types.

Topics:
• Types of balances: top-loading, analytical, microbalances.
• Principles of weighing: taring, zeroing, environmental effects.
• Weighing solids, liquids, and hygroscopic substances.
• Calibration procedure using standard weights.
• Common errors: static, drafts, thermal effects.
• Documentation of weighing data and GLP.

Day 4: pH Meters and Electrochemical Measurements

Objectives:
• Explain the principle of pH measurement.
• Calibrate and use a pH meter correctly.
• Perform pH measurements on various samples.
• Maintain and store pH electrodes properly.

Topics:
• Theory of pH and electrode operation.
• Parts of a pH meter: electrode, meter, temperature probe.
• Calibration buffers and procedures.
• Measuring pH of solutions, suspensions, and semi-solids.
• Electrode maintenance: cleaning, storage, regeneration.
• Troubleshooting common pH measurement errors.

Day 5: Centrifuges and Separation Techniques

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of centrifugation.
• Operate different types of centrifuges safely.
• Prepare samples and select appropriate rotor and speed.
• Perform basic separations and interpret results.

Topics:
• Centrifugation theory: relative centrifugal force (RCF).
• Types: microcentrifuges, refrigerated, ultracentrifuges.
• Rotor selection: fixed-angle, swing-bucket.
• Balancing tubes and loading rotors.
• Safety precautions: imbalance, aerosol containment.
• Applications: pelleting, density gradient, phase separation.

Day 6: Spectrophotometers and Optical Measurements

Objectives:
• Explain the principle of spectrophotometry.
• Operate a UV-Vis spectrophotometer correctly.
• Perform a wavelength scan and measure absorbance.
• Prepare standard curves and quantify analytes.

• Light spectrum, absorbance, and transmittance.
• Components: light source, monochromator, detector.
• Types: single-beam, double-beam, diode array.
• Cuvette selection and handling.
• Calibration with blank and standards.
• Quantitative analysis: Beer-Lambert law, standard curve.

Day 7: Microscopes and Imaging Techniques

Objectives:
• Identify parts and functions of a compound microscope.
• Prepare wet mounts and stained slides.
• Focus and adjust illumination for optimal viewing.
• Measure specimens using an ocular micrometer.

Topics:
• Microscope components: eyepiece, objectives, stage, condenser.
• Types of microscopy: brightfield, phase contrast, fluorescence.
• Slide preparation: smears, wet mounts, staining.
• Kohler illumination adjustment.
• Calibration of eyepiece reticle.
• Care and maintenance of microscopes.

Day 8: Sterilization and Aseptic Techniques

Objectives:
• Understand principles of sterilization and disinfection.
• Operate an autoclave safely and effectively.
• Apply aseptic techniques in laboratory work.
• Validate sterilization processes using indicators.

• Methods: moist heat, dry heat, filtration, radiation.
• Autoclave operation: cycles, loading, safety.
• Biological and chemical indicators.
• Aseptic technique: work area, personal hygiene.
• Laminar flow hoods and biosafety cabinets.
• Waste disposal of contaminated materials.

Day 9: Integration, Troubleshooting, and Practical Assessment

Objectives:
• Integrate multiple equipment operations for a complete procedure.
• Troubleshoot common equipment malfunctions.
• Perform a practical assessment demonstrating competence.
• Complete documentation and interpret results.

Topics:
• Scenario-based exercises combining multiple instruments.
• Troubleshooting: error codes, calibration drift, contamination.
• Data interpretation and report writing.
• Practical assessment: set-up, operation, clean-up.
• Review of SOPs and GLP.
• Course evaluation and feedback.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
