This course equips managers and aspiring managers with the essential skills to effectively manage interpretation services in professional contexts. It focuses on planning, coordinating, and evaluating interpreting assignments to ensure quality and ethical standards are met.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Interpreting and the SAQA Context

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and scope of Unit Standard 116801
• Define interpreting and differentiate between modes (consecutive, simultaneous, whispered)
• Recognise the role of interpreters in South African professional contexts
• Identify ethical responsibilities and professional conduct standards

• Overview of SAQA and the NQF framework
• Introduction to interpreting: definitions and history
• Modes of interpreting: consecutive, simultaneous, whispered
• The interpreter’s role in legal, medical, and business settings
• Ethical principles: confidentiality, impartiality, accuracy
• Professional codes of conduct and accountability

Day 2: Language Proficiency and Discourse Analysis

Objectives:
• Analyse source and target language structures for interpreting
• Identify register, tone, and cultural nuances in discourse
• Develop strategies for managing idiomatic expressions and metaphors
• Practise active listening and comprehension skills

Topics:
• Language proficiency requirements for interpreters
• Discourse analysis: cohesion, coherence, and pragmatics
• Register and style: formal vs. informal language
• Handling idioms, metaphors, and culturally bound terms
• Active listening techniques
• Note-taking fundamentals for consecutive interpreting

Day 3: Consecutive Interpreting Techniques

Objectives:
• Master note-taking symbols and structures
• Apply memory retention strategies
• Deliver accurate consecutive interpretations of short speeches
• Manage speaker pace and segmentation

Topics:
• Note-taking systems: symbols, abbreviations, and layout
• Memory techniques: chunking, visualization, and association
• Segmentation and reformulation strategies
• Practising with 2-3 minute speeches
• Self-assessment and error analysis
• Peer feedback on delivery and accuracy

Day 4: Simultaneous Interpreting Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the cognitive demands of simultaneous interpreting
• Develop split attention and dual-task processing
• Practise shadowing and décalage management
• Use equipment: headsets, microphones, and booths

Topics:
• Cognitive load theory in simultaneous interpreting
• Split attention: listening and speaking concurrently
• Shadowing exercises
• Décalage: time lag and ear-voice span
• Introduction to interpreting equipment
• Booth etiquette and team interpreting protocols

Day 5: Advanced Simultaneous Interpreting and Coping Strategies

Objectives:
• Apply coping strategies for fast or dense source speech
• Manage numbers, names, and technical terms
• Practise with recorded speeches (5-7 minutes)
• Develop self-monitoring and correction techniques

Topics:
• Coping strategies: anticipation, compression, and omission
• Handling numbers, acronyms, and proper nouns
• Strategies for technical or specialised content
• Practising with increasing speed and complexity
• Self-monitoring: error detection and repair
• Peer review of simultaneous performances

Day 6: Interpreting in Legal Contexts

Objectives:
• Understand the South African legal system and courtroom procedures
• Apply interpreting protocols for court proceedings
• Manage legal terminology and oaths
• Maintain impartiality and accuracy under pressure

• Overview of South African court structure
• Roles of legal interpreters: rights and responsibilities
• Legal terminology: common terms and phrases
• Interpreting oaths, witness testimony, and judgments
• Ethical dilemmas in legal interpreting
• Role-play: mock trial interpreting exercises

Day 7: Interpreting in Medical and Healthcare Settings

Objectives:
• Understand medical terminology and patient confidentiality
• Apply interpreting protocols for consultations and emergencies
• Handle sensitive information with empathy and accuracy
• Navigate cultural beliefs affecting healthcare communication

• Medical terminology basics: anatomy, symptoms, treatments
• Patient confidentiality and POPIA compliance
• Interpreting in consultations, assessments, and informed consent
• Emergency and end-of-life interpreting
• Cultural competence in healthcare
• Role-play: doctor-patient scenarios

Day 8: Interpreting in Business and Conference Settings

Objectives:
• Understand business meeting protocols and corporate language
• Manage multilingual negotiations and presentations
• Use conference interpreting equipment effectively
• Apply team interpreting strategies for long sessions

• Business terminology: finance, strategy, and negotiations
• Meeting protocols: agendas, minutes, and Q&A sessions
• Conference interpreting: booth work with partner
• Managing multilingual panels and presentations
• Team interpreting: relay and chuchotage
• Practising with simulated business meetings

Day 9: Community Interpreting and Public Service

Objectives:
• Understand the role of interpreters in public service
• Navigate power dynamics and advocacy boundaries
• Interpret for asylum seekers, refugees, and marginalised groups
• Apply trauma-informed interpreting practices

• Community interpreting: definition and contexts
• Power dynamics: interpreter as cultural mediator
• Working with vulnerable populations
• Trauma-informed communication
• Ethical challenges: advocacy vs. neutrality
• Role-play: police interviews, social services

Day 10: Technology and Tools for Interpreters

Objectives:
• Use interpreting-specific software and apps
• Manage remote interpreting platforms (RSI)
• Apply glossary building and terminology management
• Understand AI and machine translation limitations

Topics:
• Interpreting technology overview: RSI platforms (Zoom, Interprefy)
• Glossary tools: Excel, SDL Multiterm, custom databases
• Note-taking apps and voice recorders
• Remote interpreting best practices
• AI and machine translation: pitfalls and possibilities
• Practising with remote interpreting simulations

Day 11: Professional Practice and Business Skills

Objectives:
• Develop a professional interpreter CV and portfolio
• Understand contracting, rates, and invoicing
• Build a network and market interpreting services
• Apply continuous professional development (CPD) strategies

• Interpreter CV and portfolio essentials
• Business models: freelancing, agencies, in-house
• Contract negotiation and rate setting
• Invoicing and tax considerations in South Africa
• Networking: associations (SAIT), conferences, online platforms
• CPD: workshops, certifications, and self-study

Day 12: Integrated Assessment and Final Practicum

Objectives:
• Demonstrate competence in consecutive and simultaneous modes
• Interpret in simulated professional scenarios
• Receive comprehensive feedback and self-evaluate
• Create a personal development plan for ongoing growth

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
