Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Animation Design Conventions

Objectives:
• Understand the historical evolution of animation design conventions.
• Identify key principles of animation (e.g., squash and stretch, anticipation, staging).
• Recognise common conventions in character design, background layout, and motion.
• Differentiate between 2D, 3D, and stop-motion conventions.
• Analyse examples of conventions in classic and contemporary animations.

Topics:
• Introduction to animation design conventions and their purpose.
• Historical milestones: from traditional cel animation to digital.
• Core principles of animation (12 principles).
• Character design conventions: silhouette, expression, and consistency.
• Background and layout conventions: perspective, depth, and composition.
• Motion conventions: timing, spacing, and arcs.
• Overview of 2D, 3D, and stop-motion stylistic conventions.
• Case studies: Disney, Anime, and Pixar conventions.

Day 2: Interpreting Character and Background Conventions

Objectives:
• Analyse character design conventions for personality and narrative.
• Interpret background and environmental design conventions for mood and context.
• Identify conventions in colour theory and lighting.
• Evaluate how conventions support storytelling and audience engagement.
• Compare conventions across genres (comedy, drama, fantasy).

Topics:
• Character design: anatomy, proportion, and exaggeration.
• Facial expressions and body language conventions.
• Costume and prop conventions for character identity.
• Background design: colour palettes, textures, and atmosphere.
• Lighting conventions: mood, focus, and time of day.
• Colour theory: emotional and symbolic use of colour.
• Genre-specific conventions: anime vs. Western animation.
• Group activity: interpreting a short animation clip for conventions.

Day 3: Motion and Timing Conventions

Objectives:
• Interpret motion conventions such as easing, follow-through, and overlapping action.
• Analyse timing and spacing conventions for realism or stylisation.
• Understand camera movement conventions (pan, zoom, tracking).
• Evaluate how motion conventions convey weight, force, and emotion.
• Apply interpretation skills to identify conventions in given sequences.

Topics:
• Principles of motion: timing, spacing, and rhythm.
• Easing and slow in/slow out conventions.
• Follow-through and overlapping action.
• Secondary action and its convention.
• Camera movement conventions: dynamic vs. static shots.
• Action staging and choreography conventions.
• Analysis of fight scenes, walks, and emotional gestures.
• Practical exercise: storyboard a simple action sequence highlighting conventions.

Day 4: Advanced Interpretation and Integration

Objectives:
• Synthesise knowledge of conventions to critique animated works.
• Apply interpretation skills to cross-cultural and cross-platform animations.
• Develop a personal interpretation framework for design conventions.
• Present a convention analysis of a chosen animation clip.
• Discuss ethical and cultural considerations in convention use.

Topics:
• Cross-cultural conventions: Western, Eastern, and African animation.
• Platform-specific conventions: film, TV, web, and gaming.
• Ethical considerations: stereotyping and cultural appropriation.
• Developing a critical analysis framework.
• Peer review of convention interpretation reports.
• Final project: present analysis of a 2-minute clip.
• Q&A and course wrap-up.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
