This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify and apply principles of social justice to empower women across different levels of society. Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Social Justice and Women's Empowerment

Objectives:
• Define social justice and its key principles (equity, access, participation, rights).
• Analyse the historical and current status of women in South African society.
• Identify barriers to women's empowerment at individual, community, and institutional levels.
• Explore the role of gender equality in achieving social justice.
• Examine the intersectionality of gender with race, class, and other social factors.

Topics:
• Introduction to social justice principles (equity, equality, fairness).
• Historical context: Women's struggles and achievements in South Africa.
• Understanding gender-based discrimination and its impacts.
• Intersectionality: How multiple identities affect women's experiences.
• Levels of society: Individual, family, community, institutional.
• Barriers to empowerment: Legal, economic, cultural, and social.
• Frameworks for women's empowerment: UN SDGs, South African Constitution.
• Case studies on women's empowerment initiatives in South Africa.

Day 2: Applying Social Justice Principles to Empower Women

Objectives:
• Apply social justice principles to design strategies for women's empowerment.
• Develop practical interventions for different levels of society.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of existing empowerment programmes.
• Create an action plan to promote gender equality in a specific context.
• Demonstrate ethical and inclusive approaches to empowering women.

Topics:
• Strategies for empowerment: Economic, educational, political, and social.
• Designing community-based programmes: Needs assessment and stakeholder engagement.
• Advocacy and policy influence: How to drive systemic change.
• Monitoring and evaluation: Measuring impact of empowerment initiatives.
• Ethical considerations: Avoiding tokenism and ensuring genuine participation.
• Action planning: Steps to implement empowerment at individual, community, and institutional levels.
• Group activity: Develop a mini-project proposal for women's empowerment.
• Reflection and commitment: Personal role in advancing social justice.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
