Description

This course equips learners with comprehensive knowledge of blasting accessories used in mining operations. Participants will understand the function, selection, and safe handling of detonators, explosives, initiation systems, and associated equipment to ensure compliance with South African mining regulations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Blasting Accessories and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the role of blasting accessories in mining operations
• Identify different types of blasting accessories and their functions
• Recognize safety requirements and legal compliance for handling accessories
• Explain the importance of proper storage and transport of accessories
• Describe the consequences of incorrect accessory selection

Topics:
• Overview of blasting accessories: detonators, boosters, connectors, lead-in lines
• Classification of accessories by function and application
• Legal framework: Mine Health and Safety Act, explosives regulations
• Safety precautions: handling, storage, and transport
• Manufacturer specifications and data sheets
• Environmental considerations and risk management

Day 2: Detonators and Initiation Systems

Objectives:
• Differentiate between electric, non-electric, and electronic detonators
• Explain how detonators function and their application in blasting
• Understand timing sequences and delay intervals
• Describe the use of detonating cord and boosters
• Identify common faults and troubleshooting methods

Topics:
• Electric detonators: construction, firing current, circuit design
• Non-electric detonators (NONEL): shock tube, delay elements
• Electronic detonators: programmability, accuracy, benefits
• Detonating cord: characteristics, connections, and safety
• Boosters and primers: types, placement, and compatibility
• Initiation systems: series, parallel, and hybrid configurations
• Testing and continuity checks
• Fault detection: misfires, cut-offs, and premature initiation

Day 3: Connecting Accessories and Circuit Design

Objectives:
• Design basic blasting circuits using connectors and lead-in lines
• Calculate resistance and current requirements for electric detonators
• Understand the use of connecting blocks and junction boxes
• Apply correct procedures for hooking up blast patterns
• Ensure circuit integrity through testing

• Connectors: types (inline, surface, trunkline) and usage
• Lead-in lines and trunklines: specifications, length, and connections
• Circuit design principles: series, parallel, and combination circuits
• Resistance calculations and Ohm's law application
• Use of blasting machines and testers
• Connecting blocks and junction boxes: installation and safety
• Hook-up procedures for typical blast patterns
• Troubleshooting circuit faults

Day 4: Blasting Accessories for Special Applications

Objectives:
• Identify accessories used in underground vs surface mining
• Understand the role of accessories in controlled blasting techniques
• Describe the use of relays, delays, and timing devices
• Explain how accessories are selected for specific rock conditions
• Discuss environmental controls: dust suppression, vibration monitoring

Topics:
• Underground blasting accessories: connectors, detonators, safety issues
• Surface mining accessories: large-diameter detonators, trunkline delays
• Controlled blasting: pre-split, smooth blasting, cushion blasting
• Timing devices: programmable delays, sequential timers
• Accessories for wet or harsh conditions
• Vibration monitoring and blast design adjustments
• Environmental controls: stemming plugs, dust suppression
• Case studies: accessory selection for different rock types

Day 5: Practical Integration, Quality Control, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Integrate knowledge to plan a complete blasting accessory setup
• Perform quality checks on accessories before and after use
• Understand maintenance and inspection schedules
• Complete a simulated blast design exercise
• Demonstrate compliance with safety standards

• Quality control: inspection of accessories, storage conditions, expiry dates
• Maintenance and record-keeping for accessories
• Simulated blast design: selecting accessories for a given scenario
• Safety audits and risk assessment for blasting operations
• Emergency procedures: misfire handling, disposal of damaged accessories
• Review of key concepts and industry best practices
• Final assessment: written test and practical evaluation

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge in realistic scenarios. Learners will handle, inspect, and connect various blasting accessories under supervision, reinforcing safety protocols and operational procedures.

Practical Activities
  • Accessory Identification and Inspection — Learners physically examine different blasting accessories, identify types, check manufacturer labels, and perform visual inspections for defects. (4h)
  • Detonator Testing and Circuit Continuity — Using blasting meters and testers, learners check detonator resistance and ensure circuit continuity in series and parallel configurations. (4h)
  • Blast Circuit Hook-Up Exercise — Learners connect a simulated blast pattern using connectors, lead-in lines, and detonators, following a blast design plan. (4h)
  • Simulated Blast Firing and Post-Blast Inspection — Using a blasting machine simulator, learners initiate the circuit and then conduct a post-blast inspection for misfires and accessory performance. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
