Bomb Disposal Operations and Procedures Training

Learning Outcomes

• Apply bomb disposal procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
• Analyze explosive devices to determine type, fusing system, and potential hazards.
• Evaluate the scene of a suspected explosive device to implement appropriate safety and evacuation measures.
• Demonstrate the safe handling, transportation, and disposal of explosive ordnance.
• Implement post-disposal procedures, including evidence preservation and reporting.
• Apply legal and ethical considerations relevant to bomb disposal operations in South Africa.

Target Audience

This course is designed for security personnel, police officers, military personnel, emergency responders, and private security professionals who are or will be involved in bomb disposal operations.

Prerequisites

Learners must be employed in a security, law enforcement, or military role that involves bomb disposal responsibilities, or have written authorization from their employer.

Course Outline

Practicals

Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience in bomb disposal operations, including search techniques, equipment operation, render safe procedures, and post-blast investigation. Learners practice under supervision to build competence and confidence in realistic scenarios.

Practical Activities

• Search and Detection Practical — Learners conduct systematic searches of indoor and outdoor areas using electronic detectors and visual inspection, locating simulated IEDs and ordnance. (8h)
• PPE and Tool Familiarization — Learners don and doff bomb suits, operate remote-controlled vehicles, and use disruptors and manual tools in controlled exercises. (8h)
• Render Safe Procedure (RSP) Practical — Learners apply RSPs to simulated IEDs and inert ordnance, including power source isolation, disruptor placement, and remote neutralization. (12h)
• Post-Blast Investigation Practical — Learners process a simulated post-blast scene, collect evidence, and reconstruct the event, coordinating with forensic teams. (8h)
• Final Integrated Scenario — Learners respond to a complex scenario involving multiple devices, IEDs, and a tactical threat, demonstrating all skills learned. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

How it works

• Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
• Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
• You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
• If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
