Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Static Electricity and Its Hazards

Objectives:
• Define static electricity and explain its generation.
• Identify common sources of static electricity in industrial environments.
• Describe the risks associated with electrostatic discharge (ESD).
• Understand the regulatory framework and unit standard requirements.

• What is static electricity?
• Triboelectric charging and charge generation mechanisms.
• Common ESD sources: personnel, materials, equipment.
• Consequences of ESD: equipment damage, fire, explosion.
• Overview of SAQA Unit Standard 244317.
• Relevant legislation and industry standards.

Day 2: Principles of Static Protection

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of grounding and bonding.
• Differentiate between conductive, dissipative, and insulative materials.
• Describe how humidity and environmental factors affect static buildup.
• Understand the concept of electrostatic shielding.

Topics:
• Grounding and bonding fundamentals.
• Material classifications: conductive, static dissipative, insulative.
• Effect of humidity on static charge.
• Faraday cages and shielding principles.
• Introduction to ESD protective packaging.

Day 3: ESD Control Program Basics

Objectives:
• Outline the key elements of an ESD control program.
• Identify ESD sensitive devices and their susceptibility levels.
• Describe the role of designated persons in ESD control.
• Understand the importance of ESD training and awareness.

• ESD control program components.
• ESD sensitivity classification (e.g., HBM, CDM, MM).
• Responsibilities of designated persons.
• Training requirements and competency assessment.
• Documentation and record-keeping.

Day 4: ESD Protective Materials and Equipment

Objectives:
• Identify various ESD protective materials and their applications.
• Describe the use of wrist straps, heel straps, and ESD garments.
• Understand the properties of ESD flooring and work surfaces.
• Explain the function of ionizers and static eliminators.

• ESD wrist straps: types, testing, and maintenance.
• ESD footwear and heel straps.
• ESD smocks and garments.
• ESD flooring and workstations.
• Ionizers: corona discharge and radioactive types.
• ESD packaging: bags, boxes, and containers.

Day 5: Grounding and Bonding Techniques

Objectives:
• Demonstrate proper grounding and bonding methods.
• Calculate resistance requirements for ESD grounds.
• Identify common grounding systems in facilities.
• Understand the importance of continuous monitoring.

• Grounding electrodes and earth connections.
• Bonding conductors and connectors.
• Resistance measurement and acceptable values.
• Grounding of equipment, workstations, and personnel.
• Common grounding mistakes and troubleshooting.

Day 6: ESD Workstation Setup and Maintenance

Objectives:
• Set up an ESD protected workstation correctly.
• Perform daily checks on ESD equipment.
• Identify and correct non-compliant workstation conditions.
• Understand the importance of housekeeping in ESD control.

• ESD workstation layout and components.
• Daily checks: wrist strap, mat, and ground continuity.
• Cleaning procedures for ESD surfaces.
• Handling of ESD sensitive items.
• Housekeeping practices to minimize static generation.

Day 7: ESD Testing and Measurement

• Use common ESD testing instruments correctly.
• Measure resistance, voltage, and charge decay.
• Interpret test results and determine compliance.
• Perform periodic testing as per program requirements.

Day 8: ESD Risk Assessment and Auditing

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for designated persons to develop proficiency in using ESD protective equipment, performing measurements, and implementing control measures. These practicals ensure learners can apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, reinforcing safe work practices.

Practical Activities
  • ESD Equipment Inspection and Testing — Learners inspect and test wrist straps, mats, and grounding cords using appropriate testers, and record results. (8h)
  • Workstation Setup and Compliance Check — Learners set up an ESD protected workstation from scratch, then conduct a compliance audit against standards. (8h)
  • ESD Risk Assessment and Measurement — Learners conduct a risk assessment in a simulated work area, measure static voltages, and recommend controls. (10h)
  • Incident Investigation Simulation — Learners investigate a simulated ESD incident, determine root cause, and develop a corrective action plan. (6h)
  • Integrated ESD Control Plan Development — Learners develop a comprehensive ESD control plan for a designated area, incorporating all practical learnings. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
