Description

This course equips learners with the competence to direct and control aircraft operations from a surface vessel, ensuring safe and efficient launch and recovery procedures. It covers communication protocols, safety regulations, and emergency response tailored to maritime aviation environments. Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Aircraft Directing from Surface Vessels

Objectives:
• Understand the role and responsibilities of an aircraft director on a surface vessel.
• Identify the key components of vessel-based flight operations.
• Recognize the safety hazards associated with directing aircraft on a moving platform.
• Explain the importance of standardized hand signals and communication protocols.

Day 2: Vessel Characteristics and Flight Deck Layout

• Identify different vessel types and their impact on aircraft operations.
• Understand the effects of vessel motion on aircraft handling.
• Recognize the importance of deck lighting and visual aids.

Day 3: Communication Procedures and Terminology

Objectives:
• Use correct radiotelephony phraseology for shipboard operations.
• Execute standard hand signals for directing aircraft.
• Understand the role of the deck officer in communication.
• Practice clear and concise communication under simulated conditions.

Day 4: Aircraft Types and Performance Factors

Objectives:
• Identify common aircraft types operating from vessels.
• Understand performance limitations related to deck operations.
• Recognize the impact of environmental factors on aircraft performance.
• Calculate basic takeoff and landing distances for shipboard operations.

• Helicopter types: single-engine, twin-engine, maritime variants
• Fixed-wing aircraft capable of STOL/VTOL

Day 5: Wind and Deck Motion Effects

Objectives:
• Analyze wind patterns over the flight deck.
• Predict the effects of vessel motion on aircraft approach and landing.
• Use wind indicators to determine safe operating limits.
• Understand the concept of relative wind and its importance.

• Wind flow over the deck: turbulence and rotor wash
• Deck motion limits for helicopter operations

Day 6: Pre-Operation Planning and Briefings

Objectives:
• Conduct a thorough pre-operation risk assessment.
• Prepare a flight deck for incoming aircraft.
• Brief deck crew on roles and emergency procedures.
• Coordinate with the bridge and aircrew.

Day 7: Marshalling Signals and Hand Gestures

• Understand the meaning of night signals using wands.
• Practice marshalling in various wind conditions.

Day 8: Deck Operations: Landing and Takeoff Procedures

• Manage the landing sequence from approach to touchdown.
• Execute takeoff procedures ensuring safety.
• Coordinate with the pilot and deck crew during critical phases.
• Handle abnormal situations during landing/takeoff.

Day 9: Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) and Survival

Objectives:
• Describe the principles of helicopter underwater escape.
• Demonstrate emergency breathing techniques.
• Understand survival equipment and procedures.
• Recognize the importance of personal protective equipment.

Day 10: Firefighting and Emergency Response on Deck

Objectives:
• Identify fire hazards on the flight deck.
• Operate firefighting equipment appropriate for aircraft fires.
• Execute emergency response procedures for fuel spills.
• Coordinate with the vessel's fire team.

Day 11: Night Operations and Low Visibility Procedures

Day 15: Advanced Scenarios and Emergency Drills

Practicals

Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience in a simulated vessel flight deck environment. Learners practice marshalling signals, deck preparation, communication, and emergency response under realistic conditions to ensure they can safely direct aircraft from surface vessels.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Marshalling Signals and Deck Communication — Learners practice standard marshalling signals for helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, both day and night, using hand signals and wands. They also practice radiotelephony and intercom communication. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Deck Preparation and Aircraft Handling — Learners prepare the flight deck for landing and takeoff, including securing loose items, deploying firefighting equipment, and positioning chocks and tie-downs. They then guide an aircraft (simulated) through landing, shutdown, and departure. (12h)
  • Practical 3: Emergency Response Drills — Learners participate in simulated emergencies including deck fire, fuel spill, and helicopter ditching. They operate fire extinguishers, conduct evacuation, and coordinate with the bridge. (12h)
  • Practical 4: Integrated Flight Deck Operations — Learners conduct full-cycle flight operations with multiple aircraft, including night operations and low visibility. They manage communication, deck flow, and unforeseen events under instructor observation. (16h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
