Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic computer literacy is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Infrastructure and IT Systems

Objectives:
• Define key infrastructure concepts and components
• Understand the role of IT infrastructure in business operations
• Identify different types of IT systems and their interconnections
• Recognise the importance of standards and best practices

• Overview of IT infrastructure: hardware, software, networks
• Business drivers for infrastructure
• Types of IT systems: servers, storage, networking
• Introduction to data centres and cloud computing
• Key industry standards (ISO, ITIL, SAQA)
• Infrastructure lifecycle: planning, deployment, maintenance

Day 2: Computer Hardware Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Identify major hardware components of a computer system
• Understand the functions of CPU, memory, storage, and peripherals
• Describe different types of servers and their uses
• Explain hardware compatibility and performance considerations

• Motherboard, CPU, RAM, storage devices (HDD, SSD)
• Input/output devices and interfaces
• Server form factors: tower, rack, blade
• RAID configurations and storage area networks (SAN)
• Power supplies, cooling, and physical security
• Hardware troubleshooting basics

Day 3: Operating Systems and Virtualisation

Objectives:
• Compare different operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS)
• Understand the role of an OS in managing hardware and software
• Explain virtualisation concepts and benefits
• Install and configure a virtual machine

• OS functions: process management, memory management, file systems
• Windows Server and Linux distributions
• Hypervisors: Type 1 vs Type 2
• Virtual machine creation and configuration
• Containers vs virtual machines
• OS security basics

Day 4: Networking Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand network topologies and architectures
• Identify common networking devices and their functions
• Explain the OSI and TCP/IP models
• Configure basic IP addressing and subnetting

• Switches, routers, firewalls, access points
• OSI model layers and TCP/IP protocol suite
• IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, subnet masks

Day 5: Network Implementation and Management

Objectives:
• Design a simple local area network
• Configure switches and routers for basic connectivity
• Implement VLANs and trunking
• Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues

• Structured cabling and patch panels
• Switch configuration: VLANs, STP, port security
• Router configuration: static and dynamic routing (RIP, OSPF)
• Network monitoring tools (SNMP, Wireshark)
• Wireless networking standards and security
• Network documentation

Day 6: Storage Technologies and Data Management

Objectives:
• Differentiate between DAS, NAS, and SAN
• Understand storage protocols (FC, iSCSI, NFS)
• Implement RAID levels for redundancy and performance
• Explain backup and disaster recovery strategies

• Direct-attached storage (DAS)
• Network-attached storage (NAS) and file sharing
• Storage area networks (SAN) and Fibre Channel
• RAID 0,1,5,6,10

Day 7: Data Centres and Physical Infrastructure

Objectives:
• Describe data centre tiers and standards
• Understand power and cooling requirements
• Explain rack management and cable organisation
• Identify physical security measures

• Data centre tiers (I-IV) and uptime
• Power distribution: UPS, PDU, generators
• Cooling systems: CRAC, CRAH, liquid cooling

• Environmental monitoring (temperature, humidity)

Day 8: Cloud Computing and Virtual Infrastructure

Objectives:
• Define cloud service models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS)
• Understand cloud deployment models (public, private, hybrid)
• Compare virtualisation and cloud computing
• Deploy a basic cloud instance

Day 9: IT Security Fundamentals

• Security policies and risk management

Day 10: Infrastructure Monitoring and Management Tools

Day 11: Troubleshooting and Maintenance

Day 12: Integration, Best Practices, and Capstone

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are integrated throughout the course to reinforce theoretical concepts. Learners will assemble and configure hardware, set up virtual machines, build and troubleshoot networks, and deploy cloud instances, ensuring they can apply infrastructure fundamentals in real-world scenarios.

Practical Activities
  • Hardware Assembly and OS Installation — Learners physically assemble a PC from components, install an operating system (Windows/Linux), and configure basic settings. (8h)
  • Network Design and Configuration — Learners design a small LAN, configure switches and routers with VLANs and routing protocols, and test connectivity. (12h)
  • Virtualisation and Cloud Deployment — Learners create virtual machines using hypervisors, set up a virtual network, and deploy a cloud instance on AWS/Azure. (8h)
  • Security Implementation and Monitoring — Learners implement firewall rules, configure encryption, set up monitoring tools, and respond to simulated incidents. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
