Target Audience

None — open enrollment. However, learners should be currently employed or seeking employment in the maritime industry.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals and Operation of Maritime Communication Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the regulatory framework governing maritime communications.
• Identify internal and external communication systems used on vessels.
• Operate VHF, MF/HF, and satellite communication equipment correctly.
• Apply proper communication procedures and protocols.
• Troubleshoot common communication system faults.

Topics:
• Overview of maritime communication regulations (SOLAS, ITU, SAQA requirements).
• Internal communication systems: intercoms, PA systems, alarm systems.
• External communication systems: VHF, MF/HF, satellite (Inmarsat, Iridium).
• GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) basics.
• Communication procedures: distress, urgency, safety, routine calls.
• Phonetic alphabet, standard phrases, and radio discipline.
• Equipment operation: power-up, channel selection, squelch, and testing.
• Fault finding and basic maintenance of communication equipment.

Practicals

3 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house

Overview

Learners will practice operating VHF and MF/HF radios, including setting up equipment, making distress calls, and using standard communication procedures. They will also simulate internal communication system checks and basic fault-finding.

Practical Activities

VHF Radio Operation and Distress Call Procedure — Learners operate a VHF radio, select channels, adjust squelch, and practice making a simulated distress call following GMDSS protocols. (1h)
MF/HF Radio and Satellite Terminal Operation — Learners operate MF/HF radio and satellite terminal, perform frequency selection, and practice routine and safety calls. (1h)
Internal Communication Systems and Fault-Finding — Learners test internal communication systems (intercom, PA) and perform basic fault-finding using test equipment and troubleshooting procedures. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
