Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to select, use, and maintain tools and equipment while minimising environmental impact. It emphasises responsible resource use, waste management, and compliance with environmental regulations. Participants will gain practical competence in operating equipment safely and sustainably.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Environmental Responsibility and Legislative Framework

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of environmental responsibility in the workplace.
• Identify key South African environmental legislation and regulations.
• Explain the consequences of non-compliance.
• Recognize the role of individual and organizational responsibility.

• Definition of environmental responsibility.
• Overview of NEMA, OHS Act, and relevant SANS standards.
• Environmental impact assessments and management plans.
• Penalties for environmental violations.
• Case studies on environmental incidents.

Day 2: Tools and Equipment Overview – Types, Uses, and Environmental Considerations

Objectives:
• Identify common tools and equipment used in the workplace.
• Describe the environmental impact of different tools and equipment.
• Explain the principles of eco-efficient tool selection.
• Understand manufacturer specifications and environmental guidelines.

Topics:
• Classification of tools (hand tools, power tools, heavy equipment).
• Fuel types and emissions (petrol, diesel, electric, hybrid).
• Noise pollution and vibration control.
• Energy consumption and efficiency ratings.
• Sustainable procurement practices.

Day 3: Pre-Operational Checks and Maintenance for Environmental Compliance

Objectives:
• Perform pre-operational inspections to identify environmental risks.
• Carry out routine maintenance to minimize environmental harm.
• Recognize signs of leaks, spills, and wear.
• Document maintenance activities for compliance.

• Daily inspection checklists.
• Fluid levels and leak detection.
• Battery and electrical system care.
• Tire pressure and fuel efficiency.
• Record-keeping and reporting procedures.

Day 4: Safe and Environmentally Sound Operation of Tools and Equipment

• Operate tools and equipment according to manufacturer instructions.
• Apply techniques to reduce emissions, noise, and waste.
• Implement spill prevention and response measures.
• Use personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.

• Operating techniques for fuel efficiency.
• Idle reduction strategies.
• Spill kits and emergency response.
• Handling hazardous substances.
• Waste segregation and disposal.

Day 5: Waste Management and Resource Conservation in the Workplace

Objectives:
• Implement waste minimization strategies.
• Segregate waste according to type (hazardous, recyclable, general).
• Conserve water and energy during tool and equipment use.
• Understand the waste hierarchy (reduce, reuse, recycle).

• Waste management plans.
• Recycling and disposal protocols.

• Energy-saving practices.
• Lifecycle assessment of tools and equipment.

Day 6: Environmental Monitoring and Reporting

Objectives:
• Monitor environmental performance indicators.
• Record and report environmental incidents and non-conformances.

• Incident reporting forms and procedures.

Day 7: Integration, Assessment, and Action Planning

• Demonstrate integrated use of tools and equipment in an environmentally responsible manner.
• Complete a practical assessment covering all course elements.
• Develop a personal action plan for continuous improvement.
• Review and reflect on course learning outcomes.

• Practical exercise: operating equipment with environmental checklist.
• Assessment: written test and practical demonstration.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
