Target Audience

This course is designed for electricians, cable jointers, technicians, and engineers involved in the installation, maintenance, and repair of medium and high voltage cables in the electrical power industry.

Prerequisites

Learners must have a basic understanding of electrical theory and be competent in safe working practices. Prior experience with low voltage cable jointing is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Cable Types and Safety

Objectives:
• Identify different types of medium and high voltage cables
• Understand safety regulations and personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Explain cable construction and components
• Describe the importance of correct jointing techniques

Topics:
• Overview of MV and HV cables (XLPE, PILC, EPR)
• Cable construction: conductor, insulation, screens, sheath, armour
• Safety standards: SANS 10092-1, OHS Act
• PPE requirements and safe work procedures
• Introduction to jointing accessories and tools
• Cable handling and storage guidelines

Day 2: Cable Preparation and Termination Principles

Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct cable preparation procedures
• Explain termination types and their applications
• Understand insulation resistance and hi-pot testing
• Apply proper stripping and cleaning techniques

Topics:
• Cable measurement, cutting, and stripping
• Removing semi-conductive layers and insulation
• Cleaning and abrading insulation surfaces
• Termination types: indoor, outdoor, GIS, transformer
• Stress control and grading principles
• Introduction to heat shrink and cold shrink technologies
• Insulation resistance testing basics

Day 3: Jointing Techniques for Medium Voltage Cables

Objectives:
• Describe straight-through and T-joint configurations
• Perform jointing using heat shrink and cold shrink systems
• Apply proper earthing and bonding techniques
• Conduct visual and electrical checks after jointing

Topics:
• Types of MV joints: straight, branch, transition
• Heat shrink jointing procedure step-by-step
• Cold shrink jointing procedure step-by-step
• Earthing and bonding of cable screens and armour
• Filling compounds and moisture barriers
• Testing: continuity, phase rotation, insulation resistance

Day 4: High Voltage Cable Jointing and Accessories

Objectives:
• Differentiate between MV and HV jointing requirements
• Understand prefabricated and field-moulded joints
• Apply proper connector crimping and compression techniques
• Perform partial discharge and HV withstand tests

Topics:
• HV jointing challenges: higher stress, thicker insulation
• Prefabricated slip-on joints and accessories
• Field-moulded joints using resin or tape
• Connector types: shear bolts, crimp, compression
• Partial discharge testing principles
• HV withstand test procedure and safety
• Documentation and quality records

Day 5: Quality Assurance, Fault Analysis, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Interpret test results and identify common faults
• Apply corrective actions for jointing defects
• Understand cable fault location methods
• Complete a full jointing project from start to finish

Topics:
• Review of common jointing defects: voids, moisture, contamination
• Fault location techniques: TDR, bridge methods, acoustic
• Cable refurbishment and repair strategies
• Final assessment: full jointing project (MV or HV)
• Quality assurance documentation
• Course review and certification requirements

Practicals

20 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions form the core of this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real cable jointing tasks. Under supervision, learners practice preparation, termination, and jointing on various MV and HV cable types using industry-standard tools and accessories.

Practical Activities
  • Cable Preparation and Termination — Learners measure, cut, strip, and clean MV and HV cable samples, then install heat shrink and cold shrink terminations. (4h)
  • Medium Voltage Straight-Through Jointing — Learners assemble a straight-through joint on a 11 kV XLPE cable using both heat shrink and cold shrink systems. (6h)
  • High Voltage Jointing and Testing — Learners assemble a prefabricated slip-on joint for a 33 kV cable and perform HV withstand and partial discharge testing. (6h)
  • Fault Location Simulation and Repair — Using a fault locator, learners identify simulated cable faults and carry out a repair joint. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
