Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely install and replace medium and high voltage electrical equipment. It covers compliance with South African regulations, safety protocols, and industry best practices for working with high-risk electrical systems.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Medium and High Voltage Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of medium and high voltage electrical systems.
• Identify key components and their functions in MV/HV installations.
• Learn safety protocols and regulations for working with MV/HV equipment.
• Apply risk assessment and safe work procedures.

Topics:
• Overview of medium (1kV-33kV) and high voltage (>33kV) systems.
• Key components: transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, cables, and insulators.
• Electrical theory: voltage levels, current, insulation, and earthing.
• Safety standards: SANS 10142, OHS Act, and relevant SANS/NRS specifications.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe isolation procedures.
• Risk assessment and method statements for installation work.
• Introduction to equipment handling and storage requirements.

Day 2: Installation and Replacement Techniques

Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct procedures for installing MV/HV equipment.
• Perform replacement of key components following manufacturer guidelines.
• Apply testing and commissioning techniques for installed equipment.
• Troubleshoot common installation issues.

Topics:
• Pre-installation checks: site preparation, equipment inspection, and documentation.
• Installation of transformers: positioning, connections, and cooling systems.
• Switchgear installation: mounting, busbars, and control wiring.
• Cable installation: laying, termination, and jointing techniques.
• Replacement procedures for circuit breakers, disconnectors, and fuses.
• Testing: insulation resistance, continuity, and high-potential tests.
• Commissioning steps: functional checks, protection settings, and energisation.
• Troubleshooting: identifying faults and corrective actions.

Day 3: Advanced Applications, Compliance, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Apply advanced installation methods for complex MV/HV configurations.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory and utility requirements.
• Integrate practical skills through simulated installation scenarios.
• Review case studies and best practices for equipment replacement.

Topics:
• Advanced topics: SF6 gas-insulated switchgear, vacuum circuit breakers, and dry-type transformers.
• Utility interface: metering, protection coordination, and grid connection.
• Regulatory compliance: quality assurance, documentation, and handover.
• Case studies: common installation failures and lessons learned.
• Review of practical exercises and assessment criteria.
• Final assessment: written test and practical evaluation.

Practicals

10 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential to develop competence in installing and replacing MV/HV equipment. Learners will work with actual components (training rigs) to perform installation, termination, testing, and troubleshooting tasks under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Transformer Installation and Connection — Learners install a small distribution transformer, connect primary and secondary windings, and verify connections using a multimeter and insulation tester. (3h)
  • Practical 2: Switchgear Assembly and Wiring — Learners assemble a low-voltage switchgear panel, install circuit breakers, and wire control circuits based on a schematic diagram. (3h)
  • Practical 3: Cable Termination and Jointing — Learners prepare and terminate medium voltage cables using heat-shrink and cold-shrink kits, and perform a straight joint. (2h)
  • Practical 4: Testing and Commissioning — Learners conduct insulation resistance, polarity, and functional tests on an installed MV panel, and simulate commissioning steps. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
