Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Medium High Voltage Station Apparatus

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of inspection, recording, and reporting for MV/HV stations.
• Identify common types of station apparatus and their functions.
• Learn safety protocols and personal protective equipment requirements.
• Recognize key components and their condition indicators.
• Familiarize with relevant standards and regulations.

• Overview of MV/HV station apparatus (transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, isolators, etc.)
• Purpose of inspection and reporting in asset management
• Safety procedures and PPE for station inspections
• Visual inspection techniques and common defect identification
• Introduction to condition assessment parameters (temperature, oil levels, corrosion, etc.)
• Regulatory framework: OHS Act, SANS standards, and SAQA unit standard 113969
• Documentation: inspection checklists and logbooks

Day 2: Inspection Techniques and Recording Methods

Objectives:
• Apply systematic inspection procedures for various apparatus.
• Use measuring instruments and tools for condition monitoring.
• Record findings accurately using standard forms and digital tools.
• Interpret readings and identify abnormal conditions.
• Understand basic troubleshooting and escalation protocols.

Topics:
• Detailed inspection of transformers (oil level, temperature, bushings, tap changers)
• Inspection of switchgear and circuit breakers (SF6 pressure, operating mechanisms, contacts)
• Use of thermal imaging cameras, multimeters, and insulation testers
• Recording data: paper-based checklists vs. mobile apps/tablets
• Data interpretation: normal vs. abnormal readings, trends
• Identifying common defects: leaks, corrosion, loose connections, overheating
• Reporting thresholds and escalation procedures

Day 3: Reporting, Compliance, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Compile comprehensive inspection reports with clear findings and recommendations.
• Apply quality assurance principles to ensure report accuracy.
• Demonstrate compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
• Integrate practical skills in a simulated inspection scenario.
• Review case studies and best practices for continuous improvement.

• Report structure: executive summary, findings, photos, recommendations
• Writing clear, objective, and actionable reports
• Quality control: peer review and verification of data
• Compliance documentation: legal and audit requirements
• Case studies: common inspection failures and corrective actions
• Simulated inspection exercise: complete process from site walk-down to report submission
• Course review and assessment preparation

Overview

Practical sessions are essential for learners to apply inspection techniques, use measurement instruments, and practice recording and reporting in a controlled environment. These hands-on activities reinforce theoretical knowledge and build competence in identifying defects and documenting findings.

Practical Activities
  • Safety Briefing and PPE Familiarization — Learners receive a safety induction, don appropriate PPE, and practice identifying safety hazards in a simulated station environment. (1h)
  • Visual Inspection of Transformer and Switchgear — Learners perform a systematic visual inspection of a transformer and switchgear, noting oil levels, temperature, leaks, corrosion, and signs of overheating. (3h)
  • Instrument-Based Condition Monitoring — Learners use thermal imaging cameras, multimeters, and insulation testers to measure parameters on live (simulated) apparatus and interpret results. (3h)
  • Report Writing and Documentation — Using data from previous practicals, learners compile a formal inspection report including findings, photos, and recommendations. (2h)
  • Simulated Full Inspection and Reporting Exercise — Learners conduct a complete inspection of a mock station, from walk-down to final report submission, under timed conditions. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
