Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely perform live work on all transmission lines and associated equipment from a mechanised maintenance vehicle. It covers legal requirements, risk assessment, and safe work procedures to ensure compliance with South African health and safety regulations.

Target Audience

This course is designed for qualified electrical technicians, linesmen, and maintenance personnel who are required to perform live-line maintenance on transmission lines using mechanised vehicles.

Prerequisites

Learners must be certified in basic electrical safety and have completed a recognised live-line maintenance theory course. A valid driver's license for the relevant vehicle class is required.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Live-Line Maintenance and Safety Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of live-line maintenance on transmission lines.
• Identify relevant legislation, standards, and safety protocols.
• Recognise hazards and risk mitigation strategies for working at height and with live conductors.
• Describe the roles and responsibilities of the maintenance team.

Topics:
• Overview of transmission systems and live-line maintenance.
• Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and relevant regulations.
• Hazard identification: electrical, fall, and mechanical risks.
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety gear.
• Emergency response procedures and rescue planning.
• Introduction to mechanised maintenance vehicles (MMVs).

Day 2: Mechanised Maintenance Vehicle Systems and Pre-Operational Checks

Objectives:
• Describe the components and functions of MMVs.
• Perform pre-operational inspections and safety checks.
• Understand load ratings, stability, and outrigger deployment.
• Apply safe driving and positioning techniques on site.

Topics:
• Types of MMVs: aerial buckets, insulated platforms, and cranes.
• Vehicle systems: hydraulics, controls, and insulation.
• Pre-start checks: fluid levels, tyres, brakes, and emergency systems.
• Load charts and stability calculations.
• Outrigger setup on uneven terrain.
• Site-specific access and egress planning.

Day 3: Working at Height and Fall Protection

Objectives:
• Apply fall protection systems and anchor points correctly.
• Demonstrate safe climbing and positioning in the MMV.
• Understand rescue from height procedures.
• Inspect and maintain fall arrest equipment.

Topics:
• Fall protection hierarchy: elimination, passive, and active systems.
• Harness, lanyards, and shock absorbers inspection.
• Anchor point selection and load ratings.
• Safe work positioning within the bucket/platform.
• Rescue plans and self-rescue techniques.
• Practical drills: harness fitting and fall arrest testing.

Day 4: Live-Line Work Procedures and Tooling

Objectives:
• Identify tools and equipment for live-line work.
• Apply safe work methods for conductor and insulator maintenance.
• Understand minimum approach distances (MAD).
• Perform hot-stick and rubber-glove techniques.

Topics:
• Live-line tooling: hot sticks, shotgun sticks, and insulating gloves.
• Minimum approach distances based on voltage levels.
• Conductor cleaning, clamp replacement, and insulator washing.
• Rubber-glove work methods and inspection.
• Bonding and grounding procedures.
• Practical session: tool handling and simulated tasks.

Day 5: Advanced Live-Line Operations and Fault Response

Objectives:
• Execute complex live-line repairs from the MMV.
• Respond to emergency faults on transmission lines.
• Coordinate with control room and ground crew.
• Apply troubleshooting and problem-solving techniques.

Topics:
• Replacing damaged insulators and hardware.
• Splicing and repairing conductors under live conditions.
• Emergency response to broken conductors or flashovers.
• Communication protocols with system operators.
• Simulated fault scenarios and team coordination.
• Risk assessment for non-routine operations.

Day 6: Practical Assessment and Integration

Objectives:
• Demonstrate competence in all live-line tasks from the MMV.
• Complete a full work cycle: planning, execution, and debrief.
• Pass the final practical and theoretical assessment.
• Review and reflect on safety culture and continuous improvement.

Topics:
• Integrated practical exercise: live-line insulator replacement.
• Pre-job briefing and risk assessment.
• MMV setup, work execution, and tool management.
• Post-job inspection and documentation.
• Written assessment covering all unit standard outcomes.
• Feedback session and certification criteria.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
