This course is designed to equip church volunteers with essential leadership and management skills for running a children's ministry. Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Children's Ministry

Objectives:
• Understand the biblical basis and importance of children's ministry.
• Identify the roles and responsibilities of a children's ministry leader.
• Explore the developmental stages of children and their implications for ministry.
• Establish a personal vision and philosophy for children's ministry.

Topics:
• Biblical foundations for children's ministry (Deuteronomy 6, Matthew 19).
• The role of the church in nurturing faith in children.
• Understanding child development: physical, cognitive, social, and spiritual stages.
• Key qualities and skills of an effective children's ministry leader.
• Crafting a personal ministry vision statement.
• Introduction to SAQA unit standard 116730 and outcomes.

Day 2: Creating a Safe and Welcoming Environment

Objectives:
• Implement child protection policies and safety protocols.
• Design age-appropriate and engaging learning spaces.
• Develop strategies for inclusive ministry to children with diverse needs.
• Establish effective communication with parents and guardians.

Topics:
• Child protection policies: screening, supervision, and reporting.
• Creating a safe physical environment: health, safety, and emergency procedures.
• Designing welcoming and stimulating classrooms for different age groups.
• Inclusive ministry: accommodating children with disabilities and special needs.
• Building partnerships with parents: communication, involvement, and feedback.
• Legal and ethical considerations in children's ministry in South Africa.

Day 3: Curriculum and Lesson Planning

Objectives:
• Select and adapt curriculum resources that align with ministry goals.
• Develop age-appropriate lesson plans with clear learning outcomes.
• Incorporate creative teaching methods to engage different learning styles.
• Evaluate and improve lesson effectiveness through feedback.

• Overview of available curriculum resources and their theological foundations.
• Principles of lesson planning: objectives, activities, and assessment.
• Creative teaching methods: storytelling, drama, music, crafts, and games.
• Adapting lessons for different age groups (preschool, primary, preteen).
• Integrating technology and multimedia in lessons.
• Methods for evaluating learning and gathering feedback from children and volunteers.

Day 4: Leading and Managing Volunteers

Objectives:
• Recruit, train, and retain volunteers effectively.
• Develop team-building strategies and foster a positive team culture.
• Delegate tasks and manage volunteer schedules efficiently.
• Provide constructive feedback and support for volunteer growth.

Topics:
• Identifying and recruiting volunteers: skills, passions, and commitment.
• Volunteer training: orientation, ongoing development, and resources.
• Building a cohesive team: communication, appreciation, and conflict resolution.
• Delegation and scheduling: creating rosters and managing absences.
• Performance management: giving feedback, addressing issues, and celebrating success.
• Creating a volunteer handbook and recognition program.

Day 5: Engaging Children in Worship and Discipleship

Objectives:
• Plan and lead age-appropriate worship experiences for children.
• Integrate discipleship principles into children's ministry activities.
• Use storytelling and Scripture engagement to nurture faith.
• Facilitate small group discussions and prayer with children.

Topics:
• Elements of children's worship: music, prayer, and interactive messages.
• Discipleship models for children: memorization, application, and service.
• Creative storytelling techniques to make Bible stories come alive.
• Leading children in prayer: teaching different types of prayer.
• Small group dynamics: facilitating discussion and building relationships.
• Service projects and missions for children: fostering a heart for others.

Day 6: Navigating Challenges and Special Situations

Objectives:
• Address behavioral issues with positive discipline strategies.
• Support children through grief, trauma, or family crises.
• Respond to spiritual questions and doubts appropriately.
• Manage large events and special programs effectively.

Topics:
• Positive discipline: setting boundaries, redirecting behavior, and restorative practices.
• Pastoral care for children: recognizing signs of distress and providing support.
• Talking about sensitive topics: death, divorce, and difficult questions.
• Crisis management: handling emergencies and child protection concerns.
• Planning special events: VBS, holiday clubs, and outreach programs.
• Working with parents and professionals in challenging situations.

Day 7: Vision, Evaluation, and Next Steps

Objectives:
• Develop a strategic plan for children's ministry growth and improvement.
• Evaluate current ministry practices using assessment tools.
• Create a personal development plan for continued leadership growth.
• Present a capstone project demonstrating integration of learning.

Topics:
• Strategic planning: setting goals, timelines, and resources.
• Ministry evaluation: surveys, observation, and data analysis.
• Continuous improvement: implementing changes and measuring impact.
• Personal leadership development: mentorship, courses, and networking.
• Capstone project presentations and peer feedback.
• Celebrating achievements and commissioning for ministry.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
