Day 1: Introduction to Risk Impact Assessment

• Key terminology: hazard, risk, likelihood, consequence, impact.
• The risk assessment process: context, identification, analysis, evaluation.
• Legal and regulatory requirements in South Africa.

Day 2: Risk Identification Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply various risk identification methods to uncover potential risks.
• Use brainstorming, checklists, and structured interviews effectively.
• Document identified risks in a risk register.
• Recognise biases that affect risk identification.

Topics:
• Brainstorming and nominal group technique.
• Delphi method and expert judgment.
• SWOT analysis and PESTLE analysis.
• Developing a risk register template.

Day 3: Qualitative Risk Analysis Methods

Objectives:
• Understand qualitative risk analysis and its application.
• Use risk probability and impact matrices.
• Prioritise risks using qualitative scales.
• Apply risk rating criteria consistently.

• Probability and impact scales (ordinal, descriptive).
• Risk matrix construction and interpretation.
• Risk ranking and prioritisation.
• Subjectivity and calibration in qualitative analysis.

Day 4: Semi-Quantitative Risk Assessment

Objectives:
• Differentiate between qualitative and semi-quantitative approaches.
• Use weighted scoring systems for risk evaluation.
• Convert qualitative scales into numerical values.
• Apply risk indices and heat maps.

Day 5: Quantitative Risk Analysis – Probability Distributions

• Apply normal, lognormal, and triangular distributions.

• Parameter estimation from historical data.

Day 6: Quantitative Risk Analysis – Simulation and Modelling

• Build a simple Monte Carlo simulation model.
• Interpret simulation outputs (histograms, cumulative curves).
• Perform sensitivity analysis to identify key drivers.
• Use software tools for simulation (e.g., @RISK, Crystal Ball).

Day 7: Decision Tree Analysis and Expected Value

Day 9: Risk Impact Assessment for Operational and Project Risks

• Assess project risks using PERT and critical path analysis.
• Integrate risk impact into project schedules.

• FMEA methodology and risk priority numbers.
• Bow-tie analysis for operational risks.

Day 10: Advanced Techniques – Bayesian Analysis and Influence Diagrams

• Develop risk treatment plans.

Day 12: Integration, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Consolidate risk assessment outputs into a comprehensive report.
• Communicate risk findings to stakeholders.
• Establish risk monitoring and review processes.
• Apply continuous improvement to risk assessment practices.

• Risk report structure and key elements.
• Risk communication and escalation.
• Monitoring indicators and triggers.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
