Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Area Integrity Management

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and scope of area integrity management
• Identify key legislation and standards applicable to mining operations
• Define roles and responsibilities of supervisors in maintaining area integrity
• Recognize the consequences of poor area integrity management

Topics:
• Overview of area integrity management
• Legal framework: Mine Health and Safety Act, regulations, and codes of practice
• Supervisor accountability and duty of care
• Basic terminology: strata control, support, ventilation, and monitoring
• Case studies of integrity failures

Day 2: Geological and Geotechnical Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Describe basic geological structures affecting mine stability
• Interpret geotechnical reports and hazard plans
• Identify common ground control hazards
• Understand rock mass classification systems

Topics:
• Rock types and their behaviour under stress
• Faults, joints, and bedding planes
• Geotechnical mapping and hazard plans
• Rock mass rating (RMR) and Q-system basics
• Stress redistribution around excavations

Day 3: Strata Control and Support Systems

Objectives:
• Explain principles of strata control
• Distinguish between active and passive support
• Select appropriate support types for different conditions
• Inspect and evaluate support installation quality

Topics:
• Principles of rock reinforcement and support
• Types of support: rockbolts, mesh, shotcrete, timber, steel sets
• Support design criteria and installation standards
• Quality control and testing of support elements
• Monitoring support performance

Day 4: Ventilation and Environmental Control

Objectives:
• Understand ventilation principles for underground mines
• Identify hazardous atmospheres and gas monitoring requirements
• Implement dust control measures
• Manage heat stress and other environmental factors

Topics:
• Ventilation circuits and airflow measurement
• Gas detection: methane, CO, H2S, oxygen deficiency
• Dust suppression and personal protective equipment
• Heat stress management and cooling systems
• Emergency preparedness: fire and gas escapes

Day 5: Water Management and Inrush Prevention

Objectives:
• Recognize water hazards in mining
• Interpret water management plans
• Implement dewatering systems and barriers
• Respond to water inrush emergencies

Topics:
• Sources of water: aquifers, surface water, old workings
• Water management plans and monitoring boreholes
• Dewatering pumps, pipelines, and sumps
• Barrier pillars and watertight bulkheads
• Emergency response procedures for inrushes

Day 6: Monitoring, Inspection, and Auditing

Objectives:
• Conduct regular area integrity inspections
• Use monitoring instruments to detect ground movement
• Document findings and report non-conformances
• Plan remedial actions based on inspection results

• Inspection schedules and checklists
• Monitoring instruments: extensometers, stress cells, convergence meters
• Data interpretation and trend analysis
• Reporting formats and communication protocols
• Corrective action planning and close-out

Day 7: Risk Assessment and Hazard Management

Objectives:
• Apply risk assessment techniques to area integrity
• Develop and review safe work procedures
• Implement the hierarchy of controls
• Facilitate risk assessment sessions with teams

Topics:
• Hazard identification and risk assessment (HIRA) process
• Job safety analysis (JSA) and task observations
• Hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering, administration, PPE
• Risk matrices and prioritization
• Reviewing and updating risk registers

Day 8: Emergency Preparedness and Response

Objectives:
• Develop emergency response plans specific to area integrity failures
• Coordinate drills and simulations
• Understand roles of rescue teams and incident command
• Evaluate post-incident recovery and rehabilitation

Topics:
• Types of emergencies: fall of ground, fire, explosion, inrush
• Emergency plans, escape routes, and refuge bays
• Incident command structure and communication
• Drill planning and debriefing
• Rehabilitation of affected areas

Day 9: Integration, Review, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Synthesize all aspects of area integrity management
• Develop a supervisor’s action plan for continuous improvement
• Complete a comprehensive case study assessment
• Demonstrate competence through final evaluation

• Integration of geotechnical, ventilation, water, and risk management
• Supervisor leadership in safety culture
• Continuous improvement and auditing cycles
• Final written assessment and practical demonstration
• Course review and feedback

Practicals

32 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for supervisors to develop the skills needed to inspect support systems, monitor ground conditions, and respond to emergencies. These practicals reinforce theoretical knowledge through field exercises and simulations.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Support Installation and Inspection — Learners install and test rockbolts, mesh, and shotcrete in a simulated environment, then inspect existing support and report defects. (8h)
  • Practical 2: Ventilation and Gas Monitoring — Learners measure airflow, use gas detectors to identify hazardous atmospheres, and set up ventilation controls. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Water Management and Dewatering — Learners operate dewatering pumps, monitor water levels, and practice emergency response to a simulated water inrush. (8h)
  • Practical 4: Emergency Drill and Risk Assessment — Learners participate in a simulated fall-of-ground emergency, conduct a risk assessment, and debrief the response. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
