• Apply the principles of clear and concise messaging.

• The communication process: sender, message, channel, receiver, feedback
• Types of communication: verbal, non-verbal, written, visual
• Common barriers: noise, cultural differences, assumptions
• Strategies for overcoming barriers
• Principles of clarity and conciseness
• Activity: Communication self-assessment

Day 2: Understanding Your Audience and Purpose

Objectives:
• Analyse audience needs and expectations.
• Define the purpose of a message and align it with audience analysis.
• Adapt communication style for different audiences.
• Apply audience analysis to message planning.

Topics:
• Audience analysis: demographics, psychographics, context
• Determining message purpose: inform, persuade, instruct, etc.
• Matching style to audience: formal vs informal, technical vs lay
• Empathy and perspective-taking in communication
• Case study: Analysing audience for a business proposal
• Exercise: Audience profile creation

Day 3: Structuring Messages for Impact

Objectives:
• Apply the pyramid principle and other structuring techniques.
• Organise content logically for clarity.
• Use signposting and transitions effectively.
• Draft a well-structured business message.

• The pyramid principle: top-down communication
• Structuring methods: chronological, problem-solution, pros-cons
• Signposting: headings, bullet points, numbering
• Transitional phrases for flow
• Practical: Structuring a memo and an email

Day 4: Writing Professional Business Documents

Objectives:
• Write clear and professional emails, memos, and letters.
• Apply appropriate tone and formatting.
• Use plain language and avoid jargon.
• Edit and proofread documents effectively.

• Email etiquette: subject lines, salutations, signatures
• Memo format and purpose
• Business letter structure: block format, indented format
• Plain language principles
• Common grammar and punctuation errors
• Editing checklist and proofreading techniques
• Workshop: Write and peer-review a business letter

Day 5: Verbal Communication and Presentation Skills

Objectives:
• Deliver clear and confident verbal messages.
• Structure a short presentation effectively.
• Use vocal variety and body language to enhance message.
• Handle questions and feedback professionally.

• Elements of effective speaking: pace, volume, pitch
• Non-verbal communication: eye contact, gestures, posture
• Structuring a presentation: opening, body, conclusion
• Using visual aids effectively (slides, handouts)
• Techniques for managing nerves
• Handling Q&A sessions
• Practice: 3-minute presentation with peer feedback

Day 6: Interpersonal Communication and Active Listening

• Demonstrate active listening skills.
• Use questioning techniques to clarify understanding.
• Provide constructive feedback.
• Manage difficult conversations with empathy.

• Open vs closed questions
• Probing and clarifying questions
• Giving and receiving feedback: SBI model (Situation-Behaviour-Impact)

Day 7: Business Meeting Communication

Objectives:
• Prepare effectively for meetings.
• Contribute constructively in meetings.
• Write clear meeting agendas and minutes.
• Facilitate small group discussions.

• Types of meetings: status, decision-making, brainstorming
• Agenda setting: objectives, time allocation, participants
• Meeting etiquette and participation
• Minute-taking: key points, action items, decisions
• Facilitation techniques for inclusive discussion

Day 8: Persuasive Communication and Negotiation

Objectives:
• Apply principles of persuasion ethically.
• Structure a persuasive message using rhetorical appeals.
• Use negotiation techniques to reach win-win outcomes.
• Handle objections effectively.

• Monroe's motivated sequence for persuasion
• Negotiation basics: BATNA, interests vs positions

• Roleplay: Persuading management for a budget increase

Day 9: Cross-Cultural Communication

• Recognise cultural differences affecting communication.
• Adapt communication style for diverse audiences.
• Avoid cultural stereotypes and biases.
• Apply inclusive language practices.

• Hofstede's dimensions: power distance, individualism, etc.
• Verbal and non-verbal differences across cultures

Day 10: Digital and Virtual Communication

Objectives:
• Communicate effectively via email, instant messaging, and video calls.
• Manage virtual team communication.
• Use digital tools for collaboration.
• Maintain professionalism in online interactions.

• Instant messaging etiquette (Slack, Teams)
• Video conferencing: camera presence, screen sharing

Day 11: Crisis Communication and Reputation Management

Objectives:
• Identify types of business crises.
• Develop a crisis communication plan.
• Craft messages for internal and external stakeholders during a crisis.
• Manage social media communication in a crisis.

• Crisis types: operational, financial, reputational
• Crisis communication principles: transparency, timeliness
• Stakeholder mapping and message prioritisation
• Drafting crisis statements and press releases

• Simulation: Respond to a product recall scenario

Day 12: Integrating Skills and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Synthesise all course concepts into a comprehensive communication plan.
• Present a communication strategy for a real-world scenario.
• Receive constructive feedback for continuous improvement.
• Reflect on personal communication growth.

• Review of key concepts from all days
• Case study: Develop a communication plan for a new product launch
• Group presentation of communication plans

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
