• Introduction to the SAQA unit standard 117540.
• Key terminology: rotation, playlist, format, genre.

Day 2: Music Genres, Formats, and Station Identity

Objectives:
• Differentiate between major music genres relevant to SA radio.
• Define radio station formats and their characteristics.
• Analyse how format influences music selection.

Topics:
• Major genres: pop, rock, kwaito, house, gospel, jazz, Afro-pop.
• Radio formats: CHR, Urban, Adult Contemporary, Talk.
• Matching format to target audience.
• Case studies of SA stations and their formats.
• Activity: Identify format of given stations.

Day 3: Music Scheduling Principles and Rotation Systems

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of music scheduling.
• Describe different rotation systems (e.g., A, B, C rotation).
• Apply rotation rules to maintain listener engagement.

Topics:
• The music scheduling clock.
• Dayparting: morning drive, midday, afternoon drive, evening.
• Rotation categories: Heavy, Medium, Light, Recurrent, Gold.
• Avoiding overplay and burn-out.
• Practical: Create a simple rotation schedule.

Day 4: Music Research and Data Analysis

Objectives:
• Identify methods for music testing and research.
• Analyse listener data and feedback.
• Use research to inform music selection decisions.

Topics:
• Call-out research, auditorium testing, online surveys.
• Interpreting listener preference data.
• Using metrics: spins, time of day, listener requests.
• Introduction to music scheduling software (e.g., MusicMaster, Selector).
• Activity: Analyse sample research data.

Day 5: Charting and New Music Introduction

• Understand the role of music charts in programming.
• Develop strategies for introducing new music.
• Evaluate new releases for potential inclusion.

• SA and international charts (e.g., SA Top 40, Apple Music).
• New music policies: hooks, test spins, charting.
• Balancing new music with established hits.
• Relationship with record labels and promoters.
• Practical: Evaluate three new songs for playlist.

Day 6: Legal and Ethical Considerations in Music Programming

Objectives:
• Understand copyright and licensing requirements.
• Comply with broadcasting regulations (ICASA, SAMRO, SAMPRA).
• Apply ethical practices in music selection.

Topics:
• Copyright, publishing, and performance rights.
• ICASA regulations: South African content quotas, local music percentage.
• SAMRO and SAMPRA reporting.
• Ethical issues: payola, conflicts of interest.
• Case study: Compliance in a SA station.

Day 7: Playlist Management and Curation

• Develop and maintain a station playlist.

• Adjust playlists based on feedback and performance.

Day 8: Advanced Scheduling: Clocks, Tempo, and Energy

• Design music clocks for different dayparts.
• Apply tempo and energy principles to maintain engagement.
• Optimise transitions between songs.

• Music clock components: intro, high-energy, low-energy.
• Tempo mapping: BPM and energy levels.
• Transition techniques: segues, crossfades, jingles.
• Practical: Create a music clock for morning drive.
• Software demonstration of clock building.

Day 9: Integrating Music with Station Content and Imaging

Objectives:
• Coordinate music with talk content, ads, and imaging.
• Use imaging (jingles, sweepers) to enhance music flow.
• Collaborate with presenters and producers.

Topics:
• Music and talk balance: stop sets, talk breaks.
• Imaging elements: intros, promos, IDs.
• Working with presenters: music logs and cues.
• Activity: Plan a 2-hour show with music and content.

Day 10: Audience Engagement and Listener Feedback

• Develop strategies to engage listeners through music.
• Respond to listener feedback and requests.

• Podcasting and on-demand music.
• Data-driven programming: AI and analytics.

• Discussion: How SA radio can innovate.

Day 12: Capstone Project and Practical Assessment

Objectives:
• Apply all learning to create a comprehensive music programming plan.
• Present and defend programming decisions.
• Receive feedback and final assessment.

• Capstone project: design a week's music schedule for a given station.
• Present rationale for format, rotation, and playlist.
• Peer and trainer feedback.
• Final assessment and certification.
• Course wrap-up and Q&A.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
