Audio and Video Recording for Broadcast Training

SAQA US 243974 | NQF 5 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to record high-quality audio and video content specifically for broadcast environments. Participants will gain hands-on experience with industry-standard recording equipment, signal flow, and production workflows to ensure professional output suitable for television, radio, and digital broadcast platforms.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply appropriate microphone techniques and camera settings to capture clear audio and video signals in a broadcast studio or field environment.
  • Demonstrate correct setup, operation, and troubleshooting of audio mixers, video switchers, and recording devices used in broadcast production.
  • Analyze audio and video signal levels, quality, and potential interference to ensure compliance with broadcast standards.
  • Implement safety procedures and best practices for equipment handling, cabling, and power management during recording sessions.
  • Evaluate recorded material for technical accuracy, timing, and adherence to production specifications before handover for post-production.
  • Design a basic recording plan that includes equipment selection, microphone placement, lighting setup, and signal routing for a given broadcast scenario.

Target Audience

This course is designed for aspiring broadcast technicians, production assistants, content creators, and media professionals who need to develop or refine their audio and video recording skills for live or pre-recorded broadcast productions.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Audio and Video Capture

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of sound and light as they apply to broadcast recording.
• Identify key components of audio and video recording equipment.
• Explain signal flow and basic setup for recording.
• Apply proper microphone techniques and camera settings for optimal capture.

Topics:
• Introduction to broadcast recording standards
• Physics of sound: frequency, amplitude, and phase
• Basics of light: colour temperature, intensity, and exposure
• Microphone types (dynamic, condenser, lavalier) and polar patterns
• Camera types and key settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
• Signal flow: from source to recorder
• Setting up a portable recording kit

Day 2: Advanced Techniques and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Implement advanced audio recording techniques for clarity and noise reduction.
• Apply advanced video composition and lighting techniques.
• Troubleshoot common recording issues (hiss, buzz, flicker, overexposure).
• Use field monitors and meters to ensure quality.

Topics:
• Advanced microphone placement and stereo recording
• Using equalizers and compressors during recording
• Lighting setups: three-point lighting, practicals, and colour gels
• Camera movement: pans, tilts, and handheld stabilisation
• Monitoring audio levels with VU and peak meters
• Troubleshooting audio interference and video artifacts
• Working with external recorders and timecode

Day 3: Production Workflow and Integration

Objectives:
• Plan a multi-camera and multi-microphone recording session.
• Execute a live recording session with proper coordination.
• Perform basic post-production checks and file management.
• Adhere to broadcast quality standards and safety procedures.

Topics:
• Pre-production planning: shot lists, sound checks, and cue sheets
• Multi-camera switching and sync techniques
• Recording for live vs. recorded broadcast
• File formats, codecs, and storage best practices
• Basic post-production workflow: ingest, logging, and backup
• Quality control checks and compliance with broadcast standards
• Health and safety in on-location recording

Practicals

10 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential for developing proficiency in operating recording equipment. Learners will set up microphones, cameras, and recorders in realistic broadcast scenarios, troubleshoot common issues, and produce a short recorded segment that meets broadcast standards.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Equipment Setup and Basic Recording — Learners set up a basic recording kit including microphone, camera, and field recorder, then capture a short interview. (3h)
  • Practical 2: Advanced Techniques and Troubleshooting — Learners implement stereo recording, three-point lighting, and troubleshoot introduced faults (e.g., hum, overexposure). (4h)
  • Practical 3: Multi-camera Recording and Production — Learners execute a multi-camera, multi-microphone recording of a simulated broadcast segment, including live switching and timecode sync. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
