Description

This course equips learners with the skills to safely and effectively install camera supports for film and video production. Participants will learn to select appropriate support equipment based on production requirements, perform installations, and ensure stability and safety on set.

This course is designed for camera assistants, grips, and entry-level film and video production technicians who need to install and operate camera supports in studio or on-location environments.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Camera Support Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the role of camera support systems in film and video production
• Identify different types of camera supports (tripods, monopods, dollies, jibs, cranes, steadicams)
• Recognise key terminology: payload, dynamic balance, fluid drag, levelling
• Discuss safety principles when handling heavy equipment
• Outline the scope of the unit standard and course outcomes

• Overview of camera support equipment categories
• Load ratings and compatibility with camera rigs
• Safety basics: lifting techniques, securing loads, working at height
• Introduction to industry standards (SAQA, SANS, OSHA references)
• Equipment inspection checklists
• Basic hand tools and fasteners used in installation

Day 2: Tripods and Fluid Heads – Theory and Setup

Objectives:
• Describe the anatomy of a professional tripod and fluid head
• Explain fluid drag mechanisms and counterbalance systems
• Perform levelling and leg adjustments on various terrain
• Calculate correct payload for head and legs
• Identify common mounting plates and quick-release systems

Topics:
• Tripod components: leg locks, spreaders, bowl adapters
• Fluid head types: 2-stage, 3-stage, geared columns
• Setting up on uneven ground: use of levelling base
• Payload capacity and centre of gravity
• Quick-release plates: Arri, Sony VCT, Manfrotto RC2
• Safety checks: tightness, stability, load limits

Day 3: Tripod Installation – Practical Application

Objectives:
• Safely assemble a heavy-duty tripod and fluid head
• Mount a professional camera and achieve dynamic balance
• Adjust pan and tilt drag to operator preference
• Perform field levelling within 2 minutes
• Inspect and maintain tripod components

Topics:
• Step-by-step assembly sequence
• Balancing technique: sliding plate, fore-aft adjustment
• Drag settings for smooth pans and tilts
• Levelling using built-in bubble level and spreader
• Maintenance: cleaning leg locks, lubricating drag mechanism
• Troubleshooting common issues: creeping, sticking, vibration

Day 4: Monopods and Shoulder Rigs – Installation and Use

Objectives:
• Differentiate between monopod, shoulder rig, and handheld stabiliser applications
• Assemble a professional monopod with fluid base
• Configure a shoulder rig for comfortable operation
• Explain the trade-off between stability and mobility
• Select appropriate support for run-and-gun scenarios

• Monopod types: compact, video, with spreader feet
• Fluid base attachment and operation
• Shoulder rig components: rods, pads, handles, matte box
• Counterweight systems for shoulder rigs
• Quick-release plates and rod clamps
• Practical considerations: weight distribution, fatigue reduction

Day 5: Dollies and Track Systems – Theory and Setup

Objectives:
• Describe the types of dollies (doorway, spider, Western) and track
• Plan track layout for smooth camera movement
• Assemble straight and curved track sections
• Safely mount a tripod or fluid head on a dolly
• Explain the role of dolly grips and push/pull technique

• Dolly types and their specific uses
• Track sections: straight, curved, leveling jacks
• Dolly wheels and steering modes
• Mounting options: hi-hat, riser, bowl adapter
• Track safety: trip hazards, securing with sandbags
• Basic dolly moves: push-in, pull-out, lateral

Day 6: Dolly and Track Installation – Practical

Objectives:
• Assemble a professional dolly and lay track on a set
• Level track using jacks and spirit level
• Mount a camera and achieve smooth movement
• Perform a basic dolly shot with consistent speed
• Dismantle and pack equipment efficiently

• Track laying: alignment, joining, leveling
• Dolly assembly: wheels, steering, brakes
• Camera mounting: balancing on dolly riser
• Practice dolly shots: focus pull coordination
• Safety protocols: sandbagging, weight limits
• Breakdown and transport procedure

Day 7: Jibs and Cranes – Theory and Rigging

Objectives:
• Understand the mechanics of jibs and cranes (fulcrum, counterweight)
• Calculate counterweight requirements for given payload
• Identify safety limits and load ratings
• Describe assembly sequence for a 2-section jib
• Explain remote head operation basics

Topics:
• Jib types: straight, articulated, telescopic
• Crane vs. jib: reach, height, payload
• Center of gravity and counterweight calculation
• Remote head systems: pan/tilt, lens control
• Rigging points: tripod mount, spreader bars
• Safety: tie-downs, working load limits, personnel exclusion zone

Day 8: Jib and Crane Installation – Practical

Objectives:
• Safely assemble a 2-section jib with remote head
• Calculate and attach correct counterweights
• Mount a camera and achieve balance
• Operate the jib through smooth arcs
• Inspect all fasteners and safety cables before use

• Step-by-step jib assembly
• Counterweight attachment and adjustment
• Camera mounting and balancing
• Remote head setup: power, video, control cables
• Practice basic moves: boom up/down, pan, tilt
• Safety check: torque all bolts, secure safety lanyards

Day 9: Steadicam and Body-Mounted Stabilisers – Theory and Setup

Objectives:
• Explain the principle of dynamic balance in body-mounted stabilisers
• Describe the components of a Steadicam (vest, arm, sled)
• Perform static balance adjustment
• Understand the role of the operator in absorbing movement
• Identify safety considerations for prolonged wear

Topics:
• Steadicam vs. gimbal stabilisers
• Vest fitting: sizing, adjustment points
• Arm assembly: spring tension, iso-elastic design
• Sled components: post, stage, monitor, battery
• Static balance: fore-aft, side-to-side, dynamic balance
• Safety: weight limits, fatigue, emergency drop procedures

Day 10: Steadicam Installation – Practical

Objectives:
• Fit a Steadicam vest correctly to operator
• Assemble arm and sled with camera
• Achieve static and dynamic balance
• Perform basic walking shots with smooth horizon
• Dismantle and store equipment properly

Topics:
• Vest fitting: chest plate, hip pads, straps
• Arm attachment and spring adjustment
• Sled assembly: camera plate, monitor, battery
• Static balance procedure: drop test
• Dynamic balance: fine-tuning with weights
• Practice walking, turning, and low-mode operation

Day 11: Car Mounts, Suction Mounts, and Specialised Rigs

Objectives:
• Evaluate different vehicle mounting options (suction, clamp, cage)
• Safely install a suction mount on a vehicle
• Secure camera with safety tethers
• Understand legal and insurance implications
• Inspect mounts for damage before each use

Topics:
• Suction cup mounts: types, load ratings, surface prep
• Clamp and cage mounts for vehicles
• Safety tethers and redundant attachment
• Vibration isolation methods
• Legal requirements: road safety, permits, insurance
• Inspection checklist: cup integrity, pressure indicators, fasteners

Day 12: Comprehensive Installation Project and Assessment

Objectives:
• Plan and execute a multi-support installation (tripod, dolly, jib) for a scene
• Demonstrate safe rigging and balancing for each support
• Troubleshoot common installation problems
• Complete a final practical assessment covering all equipment types
• Reflect on best practices and career pathways

• Troubleshooting: vibration, imbalance, looseness

Overview

This course emphasises hands-on installation of professional camera supports. Learners spend 40 hours across 5 practical sessions assembling, balancing, and operating tripods, dollies, jibs, and Steadicams under supervision, building competence in safe rigging and troubleshooting.

Practical Activities
  • Tripod and Fluid Head Assembly & Balancing — Learners assemble a heavy-duty tripod with fluid head, mount a camera, and achieve dynamic balance while adjusting drag and levelling. (8h)
  • Dolly and Track Setup & Operation — Learners lay straight and curved track, assemble a dolly, mount a camera, and perform basic dolly shots with smooth motion. (8h)
  • Jib Rigging and Operation — Learners assemble a 2-section jib, calculate counterweights, mount a camera with remote head, and practice boom and pan moves. (8h)
  • Steadicam Static and Dynamic Balance — Learners fit a Steadicam vest, assemble arm and sled, achieve static and dynamic balance, and practice walking shots. (8h)
  • Comprehensive Installation Project — Learners plan and execute a multi-support installation (tripod, dolly, and jib) for a simulated scene, demonstrating safe rigging and troubleshooting. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
