This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to promote women's empowerment and gender practices within their organisations. Participants will understand the legislative and social frameworks supporting gender equality and learn to implement practices that foster an inclusive workplace culture. The course aims to empower individuals to act as agents of change in advancing gender equity.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, familiarity with basic human resources concepts is beneficial.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment

Objectives:
• Understand key concepts: gender, sex, gender equality, gender equity, and women's empowerment.
• Identify the historical and social context of gender inequality in South Africa.
• Recognise the legal and policy frameworks supporting gender equality (e.g., Constitution, CEDAW, NGP).
• Analyse the role of stereotypes, norms, and power dynamics in perpetuating gender discrimination.

Topics:
• Defining gender, sex, and gender identity
• The difference between gender equality and gender equity
• Historical overview of women's struggles in South Africa
• South African legal framework: Constitution, Employment Equity Act, and relevant policies
• Understanding patriarchy and its impact on society
• Gender stereotypes and unconscious bias
• Introduction to women's empowerment: economic, social, and political dimensions
• Case studies on gender inequality in the workplace and community

Day 2: Practical Strategies for Promoting Gender Practices and Empowerment

Objectives:
• Apply tools to mainstream gender in organisational policies and programmes.
• Develop skills to challenge and address gender discrimination and harassment.
• Design action plans for promoting women's empowerment in specific contexts.
• Evaluate the impact of gender practices on individuals and communities.

Topics:
• Gender mainstreaming: concepts and practical steps
• Developing gender-sensitive indicators and monitoring tools
• Addressing gender-based violence and harassment: protocols and support
• Engaging men and boys as allies in gender equality
• Strategies for economic empowerment: access to resources, entrepreneurship, and leadership
• Creating inclusive workplaces: policies on parental leave, flexible work, and equal pay
• Community-based approaches: mobilisation and advocacy
• Action planning: setting goals, identifying stakeholders, and measuring progress

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
