Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Positive Relationships with Children

Objectives:
• Define what constitutes a positive relationship with children.
• Understand the importance of positive relationships for child development.
• Identify key principles of building trust and respect.
• Reflect on personal attitudes and beliefs about children.

Day 2: Understanding Child Development Stages

Objectives:
• Describe developmental stages from early childhood to adolescence.
• Recognize age-appropriate behaviours and needs.
• Connect developmental milestones to relationship building.
• Apply developmental knowledge to daily interactions.

• Overview of physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development
• Early childhood (0-5 years): attachment and exploration
• Middle childhood (6-11 years): industry and competence
• Adolescence (12-18 years): identity and autonomy
• Activity: case studies matching behaviours to stages

Day 3: Communication Skills for Connection

Objectives:
• Demonstrate active listening techniques.
• Use 'I' messages and assertive communication.
• Adapt communication style to child's age and temperament.
• Avoid communication barriers that damage relationships.

• Active listening: paraphrasing, reflecting feelings, validating
• Assertive vs. aggressive vs. passive communication
• 'I' messages for expressing needs and feelings
• Communication barriers: blaming, shaming, interrupting
• Role-play: age-specific communication scenarios

Day 4: Emotional Intelligence and Empathy

Objectives:
• Define emotional intelligence (EQ) and its components.
• Develop empathy through perspective-taking.
• Help children identify and regulate emotions.
• Model emotional intelligence in daily interactions.

Day 5: Positive Discipline and Guidance

Objectives:
• Distinguish between punishment and discipline.
• Apply natural and logical consequences.
• Use positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviour.
• Implement problem-solving approaches to conflict.

• Principles of positive discipline (Dreikurs, Nelsen)
• Natural vs. logical consequences
• Encouragement vs. praise
• Problem-solving steps: identify, brainstorm, choose, evaluate
• Scenario practice: common discipline challenges

Day 6: Building Trust and Safety

Objectives:
• Explain the importance of trust in relationships.
• Create a physically and emotionally safe environment.
• Recognize signs of distress or abuse.
• Respond appropriately to disclosures of harm.

• Trust-building strategies: consistency, reliability, honesty
• Creating safe spaces: routines, clear expectations, warmth
• Recognizing signs of abuse and neglect (Children's Act)
• Responding to disclosures: listen, believe, report

Day 7: Culturally Responsive Relationships

• Understand diverse family structures and cultural backgrounds.
• Respect cultural differences in child-rearing practices.
• Adapt communication to accommodate cultural norms.
• Promote inclusivity and anti-bias practices.

• South African cultural diversity: languages, traditions, beliefs

• Culturally responsive communication: non-verbal cues, respect for elders

Day 8: Collaborating with Families and Caregivers

Objectives:
• Build partnerships with families to support child development.
• Conduct effective parent-teacher meetings.
• Use strengths-based approaches when working with families.
• Navigate difficult conversations with parents.

• Strategies for building trust with families

Day 9: Supporting Children with Special Needs

• Collaborate with support professionals and families.

Day 10: Trauma-Informed Practice

Objectives:
• Understand the impact of trauma on child development.
• Recognize signs of trauma and toxic stress.
• Apply trauma-informed principles: safety, trust, choice, collaboration.
• Build resilience through nurturing relationships.

• Types of trauma: acute, chronic, complex, historical
• Impact on brain development and behaviour
• Trauma-informed approach: SAMHSA's four R's (Realize, Recognize, Respond, Resist re-traumatization)
• Building resilience: protective factors, strengths-based
• Activity: creating a trauma-informed classroom/space

Day 11: Self-Care and Professional Boundaries

Objectives:
• Recognize signs of burnout and compassion fatigue.
• Develop a self-care plan to maintain well-being.
• Establish professional boundaries with children and families.
• Seek support and supervision when needed.

• Burnout vs. compassion fatigue: signs and symptoms
• Self-care strategies: physical, emotional, social, spiritual
• Setting professional boundaries: time, role, confidentiality
• Ethical considerations in relationships (SAQA code of conduct)

Day 12: Integration and Action Plan

Objectives:
• Synthesize learning from the course.
• Create a personal action plan for building positive relationships.
• Evaluate progress and set goals for ongoing development.
• Share strategies with peers for collective growth.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
