Description

This course equips participants with practical healing techniques to support emotionally wounded children in educational, community, and care settings. Learners will develop the skills to identify emotional trauma, apply appropriate interventions, and create safe environments for children to heal and thrive.

Target Audience

This training is designed for teachers, social workers, counsellors, caregivers, and youth workers who interact with children who have experienced emotional trauma or adverse childhood experiences.

Course Outline

Day 1: Understanding Emotional Wounding in Children

Objectives:
• Define emotional wounding and its manifestations in children.
• Identify common causes of emotional trauma in the South African context.
• Recognize the impact of emotional wounds on child development.
• Understand the role of attachment theory in healing.

Topics:
• Introduction to emotional wounding: types and sources
• Developmental stages and vulnerability to trauma
• Attachment theory and its relevance to wounded children
• Cultural considerations in emotional healing
• Ethical considerations in working with children

Day 2: Foundations of Healing: Safety and Trust

Objectives:
• Establish a safe therapeutic environment for children.
• Build trust and rapport with emotionally wounded children.
• Apply principles of trauma-informed care.
• Use active listening and validation techniques.

• Creating physical and emotional safety
• Building trust: consistency, honesty, and empathy
• Trauma-informed care principles
• Active listening and reflective responses
• Setting boundaries and maintaining structure

Day 3: Expressive Therapies for Emotional Release

Objectives:
• Utilize art, play, and sandplay therapy for expression.
• Facilitate storytelling and narrative techniques.
• Incorporate music and movement for emotional release.
• Adapt expressive therapies for different age groups.

• Art therapy: drawing, painting, and collage
• Play therapy: structured and non-directive approaches
• Sandplay therapy: symbolic expression

Day 4: Cognitive and Behavioral Interventions

Objectives:
• Apply cognitive-behavioral techniques for trauma.
• Teach emotional regulation and coping skills.
• Use mindfulness and relaxation exercises.
• Address maladaptive beliefs and behaviors.

• Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) basics for children
• Emotional regulation strategies
• Coping skills development

• Behavioral interventions and positive reinforcement
• Challenging negative self-talk

Day 5: Somatic Approaches and Body-Based Healing

Objectives:
• Understand the connection between trauma and the body.
• Apply somatic experiencing techniques.
• Use breathwork and grounding exercises.
• Incorporate sensory integration activities.

• Trauma and the body: polyvagal theory
• Somatic experiencing: pendulation and titration
• Breathwork for calming the nervous system
• Grounding techniques
• Sensory integration activities
• Body mapping and movement

Day 6: Family Systems and Community Support

Objectives:
• Engage families in the healing process.
• Use family therapy techniques to support the child.
• Build community support networks.
• Address systemic issues affecting the child.

• Family therapy approaches: structural and narrative
• Parenting skills and psychoeducation
• Sibling dynamics and support
• Community resources and referrals
• Advocacy and multi-disciplinary collaboration
• Cultural and community healing practices

Day 7: Integration, Self-Care, and Professional Practice

Objectives:
• Integrate all techniques into a cohesive treatment plan.
• Develop self-care strategies to prevent vicarious trauma.
• Evaluate progress and adapt interventions.
• Plan for ongoing professional development.

• Creating individualized healing plans
• Case studies and practical application
• Self-care for practitioners: burnout prevention
• Supervision and peer support
• Ethical dilemmas and decision-making

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
