This course provides polygraph examiners with a foundational understanding of human anatomy and physiology relevant to psychophysiological detection of deception. Learners will explore the biological systems that underpin polygraph measurements, including cardiovascular, respiratory, and electrodermal responses, enabling accurate interpretation of polygraph charts and enhanced professional credibility.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology for Polygraphy

Objectives:
• Define anatomy and physiology and their relevance to polygraph examinations.
• Identify the major organ systems involved in physiological responses.
• Explain the basic principles of homeostasis and feedback mechanisms.

Topics:
• Overview of the human body: cells, tissues, organs, systems.
• Homeostasis and negative/positive feedback.
• Introduction to the nervous system and endocrine system.
• Relevance of physiological responses to deception detection.

Day 2: The Nervous System: Structure and Function

Objectives:
• Describe the structure of neurons and the central/peripheral nervous systems.
• Explain synaptic transmission and neurotransmitters.
• Understand the autonomic nervous system's role in stress responses.

Topics:
• Neuron anatomy and types.
• Central nervous system: brain and spinal cord.
• Peripheral nervous system: somatic and autonomic divisions.
• Autonomic nervous system: sympathetic and parasympathetic branches.
• Neurotransmitters relevant to polygraphy (e.g., adrenaline, noradrenaline).

Day 3: The Cardiovascular System: Heart and Blood Vessels

Objectives:
• Describe the anatomy of the heart and major blood vessels.
• Explain cardiac cycle, blood pressure, and pulse.
• Relate cardiovascular changes to emotional arousal and deception.

Topics:
• Heart structure: chambers, valves, conduction system.
• Blood vessels: arteries, veins, capillaries.
• Cardiac cycle and heart sounds.
• Blood pressure regulation and measurement.
• Cardiovascular responses to stress and lying.

Day 4: The Respiratory System: Breathing and Gas Exchange

Objectives:
• Identify the structures of the respiratory tract.
• Explain mechanics of breathing and gas exchange.
• Understand respiratory changes during arousal and deception.

Topics:
• Upper and lower respiratory tract anatomy.
• Lungs, pleura, and diaphragm.
• Mechanism of ventilation: inspiration and expiration.
• Gas exchange and transport.
• Respiratory patterns and polygraph tracings.

Day 5: The Skin and Electrodermal Activity

Objectives:
• Describe the structure of the skin and sweat glands.
• Explain the physiological basis of electrodermal activity.
• Relate skin conductance responses to emotional arousal.

Topics:
• Layers of the skin: epidermis, dermis, hypodermis.
• Sweat glands: eccrine and apocrine.
• Electrodermal activity: skin conductance and resistance.
• Factors affecting electrodermal responses.
• Interpretation of galvanic skin response in polygraphy.

Day 6: The Endocrine System: Hormones and Stress

Objectives:
• Identify major endocrine glands and their hormones.
• Explain the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.
• Understand hormonal changes during stress and deception.

Topics:
• Endocrine glands: pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, etc.
• Hormone action and feedback loops.
• Stress response: cortisol and catecholamines.
• Effects of hormones on cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
• Relevance to polygraph testing.

Day 7: Integration of Physiological Systems in Polygraphy

Objectives:
• Synthesize knowledge of nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine systems.
• Explain how these systems interact during a polygraph examination.
• Identify artifacts and confounding factors in polygraph recordings.

Topics:
• Interplay between autonomic nervous system and target organs.
• Physiological changes during deception vs. non-deception.
• Common artifacts: movement, breathing irregularities, medication effects.
• Baseline establishment and normalization.
• Case studies of integrated responses.

Day 8: Practical Application: Polygraph Instrumentation and Data Collection

Objectives:
• Operate polygraph sensors for pneumograph, cardiograph, and galvanic skin response.
• Attach sensors correctly to a subject.
• Collect baseline and stimulus-response data.

Topics:
• Polygraph components: sensors, amplifiers, recording devices.
• Sensor placement and calibration.
• Conducting a mock polygraph examination.
• Identifying signal quality and troubleshooting.
• Data collection protocols.

Day 9: Interpretation and Report Writing

Objectives:
• Analyze polygraph charts for physiological responses.
• Apply scoring methods to determine deception.
• Write a professional polygraph examination report.

Topics:
• Chart analysis: identification of relevant responses.
• Scoring systems: numerical, qualitative.
• Integrating physiological knowledge into interpretation.
• Report structure and content.
• Ethical considerations and limitations.

Practicals

24 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practicals provide hands-on experience with polygraph equipment, sensor placement, data collection, and chart interpretation. Learners will conduct mock examinations and practice scoring and report writing under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Sensor Placement and Calibration — Learners practice attaching pneumograph, cardiograph, and electrodermal sensors to a volunteer and calibrating the equipment. (4h)
  • Mock Polygraph Examination: Data Collection — Learners conduct a full mock polygraph examination including pre-test interview, question formulation, and data collection. (8h)
  • Chart Analysis and Scoring — Learners analyze pre-recorded polygraph charts, identify physiological responses, and apply numerical scoring. (6h)
  • Report Writing and Case Review — Learners write a complete polygraph examination report based on a mock case and review sample reports. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
