Course Outline

Day 1: Foundational Safety Principles in Firearms Maintenance

Objectives:
• Understand the legal and regulatory framework for firearms safety in South Africa.
• Identify common hazards and risks associated with firearms maintenance.
• Explain the importance of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling procedures.
• Describe the basic components and functions of firearms relevant to maintenance safety.

Topics:
• Overview of the Firearms Control Act and relevant regulations.
• Identifying hazards: mechanical, chemical, and environmental risks.
• Safe handling protocols: muzzle discipline, trigger control, and clearing procedures.
• Personal protective equipment: types, correct use, and maintenance.
• Basic firearm anatomy: action types, safety mechanisms, and common malfunctions.
• Safety signs and symbols in the workplace.

Day 2: Safe Maintenance Procedures and Risk Mitigation

Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct procedures for cleaning and lubricating firearms safely.
• Apply risk assessment techniques to identify and control hazards during maintenance.
• Implement safe storage and transportation practices for firearms and ammunition.
• Understand the correct use of tools and chemicals in firearms maintenance.

Topics:
• Step-by-step cleaning and lubrication procedures for various firearm types.
• Risk assessment methods: hazard identification, risk evaluation, and control measures.
• Safe storage: locking devices, ammunition segregation, and inventory control.
• Transportation safety: cases, vehicle storage, and legal requirements.
• Tool safety: proper use of cleaning rods, brushes, solvents, and lubricants.
• Chemical safety: Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and handling of solvents and oils.

Day 3: Advanced Safety Integration and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Perform a complete maintenance cycle on a firearm while adhering to all safety protocols.
• Troubleshoot common safety issues and implement corrective actions.
• Evaluate personal and team safety performance through case studies and drills.
• Compile a safety checklist for firearms maintenance tasks.

Topics:
• Practical maintenance session: disassembly, cleaning, inspection, reassembly, and function check.
• Troubleshooting: identifying wear, damage, or improper assembly that compromises safety.
• Case studies: analyzing incidents and near-misses to improve safety practices.
• Team safety drills: communication, emergency response, and buddy checks.
• Developing and using a maintenance safety checklist.
• Final assessment: practical demonstration and written test on safety procedures.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
