This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively use communication aids and equipment to enhance interaction in various contexts. It covers the selection, operation, and maintenance of devices such as hearing aids, speech-generating devices, and visual aids to support clear and inclusive communication.

This course is designed for individuals who need to communicate with people who have hearing, speech, or visual impairments, including healthcare workers, educators, customer service representatives, and disability support staff.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Communication Aids and Equipment

Objectives:
• Define communication aids and equipment and their role in effective interaction.
• Identify different types of communication aids and their applications.
• Understand the legal and ethical framework governing communication aids in South Africa.
• Assess the needs of individuals requiring communication support.
• Explore the benefits of using communication aids in various settings.

• Overview of communication aids and equipment
• Categories of communication aids (low-tech, high-tech, augmentative and alternative communication)
• Legal framework: SAQA, HPCSA guidelines, and disability rights
• Needs assessment principles
• Benefits and limitations of communication aids

Day 2: Selecting and Customising Communication Aids

Objectives:
• Evaluate criteria for selecting appropriate communication aids.
• Customise communication aids to meet individual user needs.
• Understand the role of assistive technology in communication.
• Demonstrate basic operation of common communication devices.
• Apply principles of user-centred design in aid selection.

Topics:
• Selection criteria: user ability, environment, and goals
• Customisation techniques for low-tech aids (e.g., picture boards, symbol systems)
• Introduction to high-tech aids: speech-generating devices, software
• Hands-on practice with sample devices
• User-centred design and trial processes

Day 3: Effective Communication Strategies with Aids

Objectives:
• Develop strategies to integrate communication aids into daily interactions.
• Enhance active listening and feedback skills when using aids.
• Adapt communication styles for diverse audiences.
• Facilitate group communication using aids.
• Troubleshoot common issues with communication equipment.

• Communication strategies: turn-taking, prompting, and pacing
• Active listening with aided communication
• Adapting for different contexts: healthcare, education, workplace
• Group facilitation techniques
• Troubleshooting: battery, connectivity, and user error

Day 4: Training Users and Support Teams

Objectives:
• Design a training plan for users and their support networks.
• Teach users how to operate and maintain their communication aids.
• Train support teams on facilitation techniques.
• Evaluate training effectiveness through observation and feedback.
• Address emotional and social aspects of using communication aids.

Topics:
• Training plan development: goals, sessions, materials
• User training: device operation, vocabulary building
• Support team training: modelling, prompting, environmental setup
• Evaluation methods: checklists, role-play, feedback
• Psychosocial support: confidence building, peer interaction

Day 5: Integration, Evaluation, and Future Trends

• Evaluate the impact of communication aids on interaction quality.
• Explore emerging technologies in communication aids.
• Develop a personal action plan for ongoing improvement.
• Reflect on ethical considerations and professional responsibilities.

• Impact evaluation: communication outcomes, quality of life
• Emerging trends: eye-gaze technology, AI, mobile apps
• Action planning for continued learning
• Ethical dilemmas: privacy, autonomy, informed consent

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
