This course equips learners with the skills to analyse crime and victimisation trends and patterns within the South African context. Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Crime and Victimisation Analysis

Objectives:
• Define key concepts in crime and victimisation trends and patterns.
• Understand the South African criminal justice context and data sources.
• Identify types of crime and victimisation data.
• Recognise ethical considerations in crime data analysis.

Topics:
• Introduction to crime trends and patterns analysis.
• Overview of victimisation theories and concepts.
• South African crime statistics sources: SAPS, Stats SA, NPA.
• Types of crime data: reported crime, victim surveys, court data.
• Ethical issues in handling sensitive crime and victim data.
• Basic terminology: prevalence, incidence, hot spots, displacement.

Day 2: Data Collection and Management for Crime Analysis

Objectives:
• Describe methods for collecting crime and victimisation data.
• Evaluate data quality and reliability.
• Apply data management principles to crime datasets.
• Use basic tools for data entry and storage.

Topics:
• Data collection methods: surveys, police records, community reports.
• Data sources: docket analysis, victimisation surveys, CCTV.
• Data quality: accuracy, completeness, timeliness.
• Data management: databases, spreadsheets, data cleaning.
• Introduction to crime mapping software (GIS basics).
• Practical exercise: cleaning and organising a sample crime dataset.

Day 3: Analytical Techniques for Crime and Victimisation Patterns

Objectives:
• Apply descriptive statistics to crime data.
• Identify spatial and temporal patterns in crime.
• Use basic inferential statistics to test hypotheses.
• Interpret hot spot maps and trend charts.

Topics:
• Descriptive statistics: mean, median, mode, frequency distributions.
• Temporal analysis: seasonal trends, time-of-day patterns.
• Spatial analysis: point mapping, kernel density, hot spot identification.
• Inferential statistics: chi-square test, correlation.
• Interpreting trend lines and seasonal decomposition.
• Practical exercise: analyse a crime dataset for patterns.

Day 4: Victimisation Analysis and Risk Assessment

Objectives:
• Analyse victimisation risk factors and vulnerabilities.
• Apply victimisation surveys to assess crime impact.
• Use repeat victimisation analysis techniques.
• Evaluate crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED).

Topics:
• Victimisation risk factors: demographic, socio-economic, lifestyle.
• Repeat victimisation: patterns and implications.
• Victimisation survey analysis: National Crime Victimisation Survey.
• Crime impact assessment: fear of crime, economic costs.
• CPTED principles and their application.
• Practical exercise: assess victimisation risk for a community.

Day 5: Integration and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Synthesise crime and victimisation data into actionable reports.
• Present findings to stakeholders.
• Develop evidence-based crime prevention recommendations.
• Evaluate ethical and legal implications of analysis.

Topics:
• Report writing: structure, visualisation, recommendations.
• Presentation skills for crime analysis findings.
• Evidence-based crime prevention strategies.
• Case study: integrating multiple data sources.
• Ethical and legal considerations in reporting.
• Final practical project: analyse a real-world dataset and present findings.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
