Description

This course equips electrical practitioners with the systematic skills to identify, diagnose, and rectify faults in electrical installations. Participants will learn to apply safe testing procedures, interpret circuit diagrams, and implement corrective measures in compliance with South African wiring regulations (SANS 10142).

Target Audience

Qualified electricians, electrical contractors, and maintenance technicians who are responsible for fault-finding and repairs in residential, commercial, or industrial electrical installations.

Prerequisites

Valid electrician’s license (e.g., Trade Test certificate or equivalent) and a minimum of 2 years practical experience in electrical installations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Electrical Principles and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand fundamental electrical concepts and units
• Identify electrical hazards and safety protocols
• Explain the importance of lockout/tagout procedures
• Recognize personal protective equipment requirements

Topics:
• Basic electrical theory: voltage, current, resistance, power
• Ohm's law and Kirchhoff's laws
• Electrical safety regulations (OHS Act)
• Safe working practices and isolation procedures
• Introduction to test equipment and its safe use

Day 2: Circuit Components and Wiring Diagrams

Objectives:
• Identify common electrical components and their symbols
• Interpret wiring diagrams and schematics
• Understand series and parallel circuits
• Apply colour coding for wiring

Topics:
• Resistors, capacitors, inductors, transformers
• Switches, relays, contactors, circuit breakers
• Reading and interpreting electrical drawings
• Single-line and schematic diagrams
• Wiring colour codes and standards

Day 3: Measuring Instruments and Testing Techniques

Objectives:
• Use multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation testers
• Perform voltage, current, and resistance measurements
• Conduct continuity and insulation tests
• Record and interpret test results

Topics:
• Types of measuring instruments and their applications
• Safe measurement practices
• Measuring AC and DC parameters
• Insulation resistance testing (Megger)
• Earth fault loop impedance testing
• Documenting test results

Day 4: Common Fault Types and Diagnostic Approaches

Objectives:
• Categorize electrical faults (open, short, earth, intermittent)
• Apply systematic fault-finding methods
• Use logical deduction to isolate faults
• Understand the impact of environmental factors

Topics:
• Open circuits, short circuits, earth faults
• Intermittent faults and their causes
• Half-split, input-to-output, and substitution methods
• Visual inspection techniques
• Effects of moisture, heat, and vibration

Day 5: Fault Finding in Lighting and Power Circuits

Objectives:
• Diagnose faults in lighting circuits
• Troubleshoot socket outlets and power circuits
• Identify wiring errors and loose connections
• Repair and test common circuit faults

Topics:
• Lighting circuit configurations (one-way, two-way, intermediate)
• Socket outlet ring and radial circuits
• Identifying reversed polarity and earth faults
• Loose connections and overheating signs
• Repair procedures for common faults

Day 6: Fault Finding in Motor and Control Circuits

Objectives:
• Understand motor starter circuits
• Diagnose faults in contactors and relays
• Test motor windings and overloads
• Troubleshoot control logic

Topics:
• Direct-on-line and star-delta starters
• Contactor and relay coil faults
• Overload relay settings and testing
• Motor winding resistance and insulation tests
• Basic PLC input/output troubleshooting

Day 7: Advanced Fault Finding and Protective Devices

Objectives:
• Analyse complex circuit faults
• Test and replace protective devices
• Verify RCD and earth leakage operation
• Use thermal imaging for fault detection

Topics:
• Multi-circuit fault scenarios
• Circuit breaker and fuse characteristics
• RCD testing and tripping causes
• Earth leakage unit diagnostics
• Introduction to thermal imaging cameras

Day 8: Repair Techniques and Compliance

Objectives:
• Perform safe and compliant repairs
• Select appropriate replacement components
• Apply soldering and crimping techniques
• Ensure repairs meet SANS 10142-1 standards

Topics:
• Soldering and crimping best practices
• Replacing switches, sockets, and breakers
• Cable jointing and termination
• Compliance with wiring regulations
• Testing after repair

Day 9: Practical Assessment and Course Review

Objectives:
• Demonstrate fault-finding skills under assessment
• Complete a full diagnostic and repair cycle
• Document findings and repairs
• Review course learning outcomes

• Systematic fault diagnosis and repair
• Completion of job cards and reports

Practicals

Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in realistic fault-finding and repair scenarios. Learners will work with actual electrical circuits, test equipment, and components under supervision to develop hands-on competence.

Practical Activities
  • Safe Use of Test Equipment — Learners practice using multimeters, clamp meters, and insulation testers on live and de-energized circuits to measure voltage, current, resistance, and insulation values. (3h)
  • Fault Finding in Lighting Circuits — Learners diagnose and repair intentionally introduced faults in one-way, two-way, and intermediate lighting circuits using systematic methods. (6h)
  • Fault Finding in Power and Socket Circuits — Learners troubleshoot ring and radial socket circuits, identifying reversed polarity, loose connections, and earth faults, then perform repairs. (6h)
  • Motor and Control Circuit Troubleshooting — Learners work with direct-on-line and star-delta starter panels to diagnose faults in contactors, overloads, and control wiring. (6h)
  • Comprehensive Fault Assessment — Learners are assessed on a simulated industrial or domestic installation with multiple faults, requiring full diagnostic and repair cycle. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
