Description

This course equips learners with the skills to analyse ground based air defence (GBAD) environments for image analysis. It covers the interpretation of imagery from GBAD systems, threat assessment, and reporting. Successful learners will be able to apply analytical techniques to support decision-making in defence and security contexts.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Ground Based Air Defence and Image Analysis

Objectives:
• Understand the role of ground based air defence (GBAD) in military operations
• Define image analysis and its application in GBAD
• Identify key components of a GBAD system
• Recognise the importance of image analysis for threat detection

• Overview of GBAD systems and their operational context
• Introduction to image analysis: concepts and terminology
• Types of sensors used in GBAD (radar, electro-optical, infrared)
• Basic principles of target detection and identification
• Role of image analysis in modern warfare
• Ethical and legal considerations

Day 2: Fundamentals of Image Interpretation

Objectives:
• Explain the electromagnetic spectrum and its relevance to imaging
• Describe image resolution, contrast, and colour
• Apply basic image interpretation techniques
• Identify common image artefacts

Topics:
• Electromagnetic spectrum: visible, infrared, radar bands
• Image characteristics: spatial, spectral, temporal resolution
• Interpretation keys: shape, size, shadow, tone, texture
• Common image artefacts and their causes
• Practical exercise: interpreting sample imagery

Day 3: Sensor Systems and Image Acquisition

Objectives:
• Differentiate between active and passive sensors
• Describe the operation of electro-optical and infrared sensors
• Explain radar imaging principles (SAR, MTI)
• Understand image acquisition parameters and their impact

Topics:
• Active vs passive sensors
• Electro-optical sensors: CCD, CMOS, multispectral
• Infrared sensors: thermal imaging, FLIR
• Radar imaging: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Moving Target Indication (MTI)
• Acquisition parameters: altitude, look angle, resolution
• Data storage and formats

Day 4: Target Detection and Recognition Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply detection algorithms for point and extended targets
• Use change detection methods
• Recognise military targets: aircraft, missiles, vehicles
• Understand clutter and false alarm mitigation

• Target detection: thresholding, CFAR, matched filters
• Change detection: image differencing, temporal analysis
• Target recognition: feature extraction, classification
• Military target signatures: air and ground
• Clutter reduction techniques
• Practical exercise: target detection on sample data

Day 5: Image Processing and Enhancement

Objectives:
• Apply image enhancement techniques (contrast, filtering)
• Perform image registration and georeferencing
• Use image fusion methods
• Implement basic image segmentation

Topics:
• Image enhancement: histogram equalisation, filtering
• Image registration: feature-based, area-based
• Georeferencing: coordinate systems, orthorectification
• Image fusion: pan-sharpening, multi-sensor fusion
• Segmentation: edge detection, region growing
• Practical exercise: enhancing and registering images

Day 6: Automated Target Recognition (ATR) and Machine Learning

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of automated target recognition
• Describe machine learning approaches for image analysis
• Train a simple classifier for target recognition
• Evaluate classifier performance

• ATR overview: template matching, feature-based
• Machine learning basics: supervised vs unsupervised
• Feature extraction: HOG, SIFT, deep features
• Classification algorithms: SVM, neural networks

Day 7: Threat Assessment and Decision Support

• Apply rules of engagement and identification friend or foe (IFF)
• Manage sensor data fusion

• Threat assessment: prioritisation, kinematic analysis

Day 8: Operational Planning and Integration

Objectives:
• Plan image analysis tasks for GBAD missions
• Coordinate with command and control systems
• Implement quality assurance for image analysis
• Adapt to dynamic operational environments

• Mission planning: sensor tasking, coverage analysis
• Command and control interfaces
• Quality assurance: accuracy, timeliness, completeness
• Dynamic re-tasking and real-time analysis

Day 9: Capstone Exercise and Course Review

• Apply all skills in a comprehensive capstone exercise
• Demonstrate proficiency in image analysis for GBAD

Practicals

27 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions are integrated daily to provide hands-on experience with image analysis software, sensor data interpretation, and target detection/recognition. Learners will work on realistic GBAD scenarios to reinforce theoretical concepts and develop operational skills.

Practical Activities
  • Image Interpretation and Target Detection — Learners interpret sample imagery (optical, infrared, SAR) to identify military targets and apply detection algorithms. (6h)
  • Image Processing and Enhancement — Learners use software to enhance, register, and fuse images, then segment regions of interest. (6h)
  • Automated Target Recognition with Machine Learning — Learners train a classifier on a dataset of military targets and evaluate its performance on test images. (6h)
  • Threat Assessment and Decision Support — Learners integrate image analysis results into a threat assessment tool and make engagement decisions in a simulated scenario. (5h)
  • Capstone Practical Exercise — Learners complete a full GBAD image analysis mission from sensor tasking to threat reporting. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
