This course equips learners with the skills to systematically apply image analysis methodologies in technical and scientific contexts. Participants will learn to select appropriate techniques, process digital images, and interpret results to support decision-making in fields such as remote sensing, quality control, or medical imaging.

Target Audience

This course is designed for technicians, analysts, and professionals who work with digital images in sectors such as geospatial analysis, manufacturing, or healthcare and need to apply structured image analysis methods.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic computer literacy is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Image Analysis and Quality Control

Objectives:
• Understand the fundamentals of image analysis and its applications in quality control.
• Identify key terminology and concepts in digital image processing.
• Recognize the importance of image quality and standardization.
• Describe the workflow from image acquisition to analysis.

• Overview of image analysis in industrial and scientific contexts.
• Digital image representation: pixels, bit depth, and color spaces.
• Image quality metrics: resolution, contrast, and noise.
• Standardization and calibration in image acquisition.
• Introduction to image file formats and compression.
• Ethical considerations and data integrity in image analysis.

Day 2: Image Acquisition and Pre-processing

Objectives:
• Set up imaging systems for consistent acquisition.
• Apply pre-processing techniques to enhance image quality.
• Correct common artifacts such as noise and uneven illumination.
• Implement basic image transformations (cropping, rotation, scaling).

Topics:
• Hardware considerations: cameras, lenses, and lighting.
• Acquisition protocols for reproducibility.
• Noise reduction filters: mean, median, Gaussian.
• Contrast enhancement: histogram equalization, gamma correction.
• Geometric transformations and registration.
• Color space conversion and channel extraction.

Day 3: Image Segmentation Techniques

Objectives:
• Differentiate between thresholding, edge detection, and region-based segmentation.
• Apply automatic and manual thresholding methods.
• Use morphological operations to refine segmentation.
• Evaluate segmentation accuracy using metrics.

• Global and adaptive thresholding (Otsu, Sauvola).
• Edge detection: Sobel, Canny, Laplacian.
• Region growing and watershed segmentation.
• Morphological operations: erosion, dilation, opening, closing.
• Segmentation validation: precision, recall, F1-score.
• Handling overlapping objects and clutter.

Day 4: Feature Extraction and Measurement

Objectives:
• Extract geometric, intensity, and texture features from segmented objects.
• Calculate area, perimeter, circularity, and other shape descriptors.
• Quantify intensity statistics (mean, standard deviation, histogram).
• Apply texture analysis (GLCM, LBP) for classification.

• Feature types: shape, size, intensity, texture.
• Shape descriptors: Feret diameter, convex hull, solidity.
• Intensity features: mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis.
• Texture analysis: Gray-Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM).
• Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Gabor filters.
• Data export for statistical analysis.

Day 5: Image Analysis Software Tools

Objectives:
• Navigate major image analysis software (ImageJ/Fiji, CellProfiler, MATLAB).
• Write basic macros or scripts for batch processing.
• Customize analysis pipelines for specific applications.
• Understand limitations and best practices for each tool.

• Overview of open-source and commercial software.
• ImageJ/Fiji: plugins, macro recording, and batch processing.
• CellProfiler: building pipelines for cell analysis.
• MATLAB Image Processing Toolbox: scripting and functions.

Day 6: Classification and Pattern Recognition

Overview

Practical sessions provide hands-on experience with image acquisition, software tools, and analysis workflows. Learners will apply concepts from lectures to real datasets, troubleshoot issues, and develop robust pipelines. These sessions are essential for mastering the technical skills required for competent image analysis.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Image Acquisition and Pre-processing — Learners set up a camera system, capture images under controlled lighting, and apply pre-processing techniques (noise reduction, contrast enhancement) using software. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Segmentation and Feature Extraction — Using sample images, learners apply thresholding and edge detection to segment objects, then extract shape and intensity features using ImageJ or Python. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Classification with Machine Learning — Learners train a classifier (e.g., random forest) on extracted features to classify objects into categories, and evaluate model performance. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Deep Learning for Object Detection — Using a pre-trained YOLO model, learners detect objects in images, fine-tune on a custom dataset, and assess detection accuracy. (6h)
  • Practical 5: Complete Pipeline and Validation — Learners build an end-to-end pipeline from acquisition to classification, validate results against ground truth, and present findings. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
