Baling Secondary Fibre with a Baling Machine Training

SAQA US 256313 | NQF 2 | Credits 3 | Duration 1 Day
From $691 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely and efficiently produce bales of secondary fibre using a baling machine. It covers machine operation, quality control, and adherence to workplace safety standards, enabling learners to contribute to sustainable waste management in the paper and recycling industry.

Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate understanding of the baling process and the properties of secondary fibre.
  • Apply pre-start checks and operate a baling machine according to manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures.
  • Monitor baling operations and adjust machine settings to produce consistent bale quality.
  • Identify and respond to common operational faults and safety hazards during baling.
  • Evaluate bale quality against specified standards and take corrective action when required.
  • Implement housekeeping and shutdown procedures to maintain a safe working environment.

Target Audience

This course is designed for operators, machine minders, and production workers in the paper, pulp, and recycling sectors who are responsible for baling secondary fibre. It is also suitable for individuals seeking formal recognition of their skills in this specialized area.

Prerequisites

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Baling Secondary Fibre

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of baling secondary fibre in the recycling industry
• Identify different types of baling machines and their components
• Describe the baling process and key safety considerations
• Explain quality requirements for baled fibre
• List common problems and troubleshooting techniques

Topics:
• Introduction to secondary fibre and baling
• Types of baling machines: horizontal, vertical, and automatic
• Key components: feed conveyor, press chamber, tying mechanism, and controls
• The baling process: feeding, compression, tying, and ejection
• Safety hazards and personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Quality standards for baled fibre: density, moisture content, and contamination
• Common issues: blockages, wire breakage, and uneven bales
• Basic troubleshooting and maintenance

Practicals

3 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners will gain hands-on experience operating a baling machine under supervision, including feeding fibre, adjusting settings, tying bales, and troubleshooting common issues. This practical session reinforces theoretical knowledge and develops safe, efficient baling skills.

Practical Activities
  • Pre-Operation Checks and Setup — Learners inspect the baling machine, check safety guards, and perform pre-start checks including power, hydraulics, and wire feed. (1h)
  • Baling Operation and Quality Control — Learners feed secondary fibre into the baler, operate controls to compress and tie bales, and evaluate bale quality. (1h)
  • Troubleshooting and Shutdown — Learners simulate common problems such as wire breakage or jam and practice clearing faults, then perform proper shutdown procedures.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
