Description

This course equips control room operators with the knowledge and skills to manage load variations on gas turbine power generating systems safely and efficiently. Participants will learn to monitor, adjust, and stabilize turbine output in response to changing grid demands, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with safety standards.

Course Outline

Day 1: Gas Turbine Fundamentals and Thermodynamics

Objectives:
• Understand the basic principles of gas turbine operation
• Identify major components and their functions
• Explain the Brayton cycle and thermodynamic principles
• Describe different gas turbine configurations
• Recognise the applications and limitations of gas turbines

Topics:
• Introduction to gas turbines: history and applications
• Basic thermodynamics: Brayton cycle, efficiency, and power output
• Major components: compressor, combustor, turbine, and auxiliaries
• Types of gas turbines: heavy-duty, aero-derivative, and micro-turbines
• Performance parameters: pressure ratio, turbine inlet temperature, and specific fuel consumption
• Overview of gas turbine systems: fuel, lubrication, and control

Day 2: Gas Turbine Operation and Control Systems

Objectives:
• Describe start-up, steady-state, and shutdown procedures
• Explain control systems and their role in safe operation
• Identify operational parameters and monitoring techniques
• Understand fuel systems and combustion dynamics
• Analyse performance degradation and operational limits

Topics:
• Start-up sequence: purging, ignition, acceleration, and synchronisation
• Load control: speed and temperature control loops
• Monitoring systems: vibration, temperature, and pressure sensors
• Fuel systems: liquid and gaseous fuel handling, fuel nozzles, and combustion
• Emission control: dry low NOx, water/steam injection
• Operational limitations: surge margin, exhaust gas temperature limits, and life consumption

Day 3: Troubleshooting and Maintenance Strategies

Objectives:
• Apply systematic troubleshooting methodologies
• Diagnose common gas turbine faults using symptoms and data
• Understand maintenance philosophies: corrective, preventive, predictive
• Identify failure modes: creep, fatigue, corrosion, and erosion
• Plan and execute routine inspections and repairs

Topics:
• Troubleshooting process: data collection, analysis, and root cause identification
• Common faults: compressor surge, combustion instability, hot gas path damage
• Vibration analysis: spectrum interpretation and balancing
• Oil analysis and borescope inspection
• Maintenance planning: interval determination and task prioritisation
• Case studies: real-world troubleshooting scenarios

Day 4: Advanced Topics and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Evaluate advanced technologies: combined cycle, cogeneration, and hybrid systems
• Apply condition-based maintenance and digital twin concepts
• Integrate troubleshooting skills into operational decision-making
• Perform a simulated start-up and fault diagnosis exercise
• Develop a maintenance plan for a gas turbine

Topics:
• Combined cycle and cogeneration: heat recovery steam generators and efficiency
• Digitalisation: IoT, predictive analytics, and digital twins
• Life extension: refurbishment, upgrades, and repowering
• Safety systems: fire and gas detection, emergency shutdown
• Environmental compliance: emissions monitoring and reporting
• Final assessment: integrated case study and group discussion

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house Venue: Pretoria, South Africa
Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience with gas turbine operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Learners will use simulators and real-world scenarios to apply theoretical knowledge, develop diagnostic skills, and reinforce safe operational practices.

Practical Activities
  • Simulator-based Start-up and Shutdown — Using a gas turbine simulator, learners perform a complete start-up sequence including purging, ignition, acceleration, and synchronisation, followed by a normal shutdown. (3h)
  • Fault Diagnosis and Troubleshooting — Learners are presented with simulated faults (e.g., compressor surge, high exhaust temperature, vibration spikes) and must diagnose the root cause using data trends and symptom analysis. (4h)
  • Borescope Inspection and Hot Gas Path Assessment — Using a borescope and engine cutaway model, learners inspect turbine blades, vanes, and combustion liners for damage such as cracks, erosion, and coating loss. (3h)
  • Maintenance Planning and Lubrication System Check — Learners perform a lubrication system inspection, including oil sampling and filter checks, and develop a preventive maintenance schedule for a gas turbine. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
