Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Chemical Preparation Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and scope of chemical preparation for material input. • Identify health, safety, and environmental regulations relevant to chemical handling. • Recognise different types of chemicals and their properties. • Explain the importance of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Topics:
• Overview of chemical preparation in industrial contexts. • Relevant OHS Act, COIDA, and NEMA requirements. • Classification of chemicals: acids, bases, solvents, etc. • Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) interpretation. • Introduction to SOPs and documentation. • Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

Day 2: Material Assessment and Selection

Objectives:
• Identify material characteristics that influence chemical preparation. • Select appropriate chemicals based on material type and desired outcome. • Perform basic material compatibility tests. • Record material specifications accurately.

Topics:
• Material properties: porosity, reactivity, composition. • Chemical selection criteria for cleaning, etching, or coating. • Compatibility testing methods. • Documentation of material and chemical specifications. • Case studies on incorrect chemical selection.

Day 3: Chemical Handling and Mixing Procedures

Objectives:
• Demonstrate safe chemical handling techniques. • Prepare chemical solutions according to specified ratios. • Use measuring and mixing equipment correctly. • Apply dilution and concentration calculations.

Topics:
• Safe pouring, transferring, and mixing techniques. • Measuring tools: graduated cylinders, pipettes, balances. • Calculating required volumes and concentrations. • Step-by-step mixing procedures for common solutions. • Emergency spill response procedures.

Day 4: Application Methods and Process Control

Objectives:
• Apply chemicals to materials using appropriate methods. • Monitor process parameters (temperature, time, pH). • Adjust chemical application based on material feedback. • Document process conditions and outcomes.

Topics:
• Application techniques: dipping, spraying, brushing, immersion. • Process control variables and their effects. • Using pH meters, thermometers, and timers. • Adjusting concentration or exposure time. • Recording data in process logs.

Day 5: Quality Assurance and Testing

Objectives:
• Conduct quality checks on chemically prepared material. • Test for desired properties (e.g., cleanliness, adhesion). • Identify common defects and their causes. • Implement corrective actions.

Topics:
• Quality criteria for prepared materials. • Testing methods: visual inspection, adhesion tests, contact angle. • Troubleshooting defects like residues or uneven coating. • Corrective actions: re-cleaning, re-application. • Documentation of quality results.

Day 6: Waste Management and Environmental Compliance

Objectives:
• Identify waste streams from chemical preparation. • Apply proper waste segregation and disposal procedures. • Comply with environmental legislation. • Minimise chemical waste through efficient practices.

Topics:
• Types of waste: hazardous, non-hazardous, recyclable. • Waste storage and labelling requirements. • Disposal methods according to SANS 10228. • Environmental impact reduction strategies. • Emergency procedures for chemical spills.

Day 7: Integration, Assessment, and Certification

Objectives:
• Integrate all steps into a complete chemical preparation process. • Demonstrate competency in a practical assessment. • Review and complete required documentation. • Prepare for certification in Unit Standard 119051.

Topics:
• Full process simulation: material assessment, chemical selection, preparation, application, quality check, waste management. • Practical assessment tasks. • Compilation of logbooks and reports. • Feedback and improvement plans. • Certification requirements and next steps.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
