Day 1: Introduction to Textile Dry Processes and Changeover Principles

Objectives:
• Understand the textile dry process workflow and its key stages.
• Define product changeover and its importance in textile manufacturing.
• Identify safety, quality, and efficiency considerations for changeovers.
• Recognise the role of standard operating procedures in changeover management.

• Overview of textile dry processes: opening, blending, carding, drawing, roving, spinning.
• What is product changeover? Scope and impact on production.
• Key performance indicators: downtime, waste, quality defects.
• Safety fundamentals: lockout/tagout, PPE, machine guarding.
• Introduction to changeover documentation and standard operating procedures.

Day 2: Understanding the Unit Standard 116323 and Regulatory Framework

Objectives:
• Explain the purpose and outcomes of Unit Standard 116323.
• Describe the NQF level and credits associated with the standard.
• Identify relevant legislation: OHS Act, SANS codes, company policies.
• Relate the unit standard to job roles and responsibilities in textile operations.

• Breakdown of Unit Standard 116323: specific outcomes, assessment criteria.
• NQF level 4: skills and knowledge requirements.
• Legal compliance: OHS Act 85 of 1993, environmental regulations.

Day 3: Machine-Specific Changeover Procedures – Blowroom and Carding

Objectives:
• Identify blowroom and carding machine components relevant to changeover.
• Perform step-by-step changeover for blowroom lines.
• Execute carding machine changeover with focus on settings and cleaning.
• Apply quality checks after changeover to ensure product consistency.

• Carding machine: settings for different fibre types and counts.
• Changeover steps: stopping, cleaning, adjusting, restarting.
• Cleaning procedures: removal of residual fibres, dust control.

Day 4: Changeover for Drawing and Roving Frames

Objectives:
• Describe the function of drawing and roving frames in the dry process.
• Execute changeover procedures for drawing frames (breaker and finisher).
• Perform roving frame changeover including bobbin and drafting settings.
• Troubleshoot common changeover issues in drawing and roving.

• Roving frame: flyer speed, twist, bobbin build parameters.
• Changeover steps: cleaning roller laps, replacing cots and aprons.
• Adjusting for different fibre blends and linear densities.

Day 5: Spinning Frame Changeover (Ring and Compact Spinning)

Objectives:
• Understand ring and compact spinning principles for changeover.
• Perform spindle preparation, traveler changes, and ring rail adjustments.
• Set twist, spindle speed, and drafting parameters for new product.
• Conduct quality checks: yarn strength, evenness, hairiness.

• Ring spinning frame components: spindles, rings, travelers, drafting system.
• Compact spinning: suction inserts, perforated drums.
• Changeover steps: doffing, cleaning, traveler ring conditioning.
• Parameter adjustments: twist multiplier, draft ratio, spindle speed.

Day 6: Winding and Package Preparation Changeover

Objectives:
• Identify winding machine types (automatic, manual) and their changeover needs.
• Execute changeover for package size, density, and winding pattern.
• Adjust tension, speed, and yarn clearer settings.
• Apply splicing and knotting techniques for different yarn types.

• Winding machine setup: cone, cheese, dye package configurations.
• Changeover steps: tube change, tensioner adjustment, clearer calibration.
• Yarn clearer settings: capacitance or optical, threshold for faults.
• Splicing vs. knotting: selection criteria and procedure.

Day 7: Quality Assurance During Changeover – Sampling and Testing

Objectives:
• Understand the role of quality assurance in changeover.
• Conduct sampling at each process stage after changeover.
• Perform basic physical tests: linear density, twist, strength, evenness.
• Interpret test results and make adjustments to meet specifications.

• Testing: count (Nm/Ne), twist per inch, tensile strength, evenness (CV%).

Day 8: Waste Management and Environmental Considerations

• Segregate and dispose of waste according to environmental regulations.
• Apply lean principles to reduce changeover time and waste.

• Waste reduction techniques: optimised cleaning, use of waste collection systems.
• Environmental compliance: waste management plan, recycling options.
• Lean manufacturing: SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) principles.

Day 9: Changeover Planning and Scheduling

• Develop a changeover plan considering production schedule and resources.
• Coordinate with maintenance, quality, and production teams.
• Use checklists and standard work instructions to ensure consistency.
• Monitor changeover performance using key metrics.

Day 10: Troubleshooting and Problem Solving During Changeover

• Apply systematic troubleshooting methods: 5 Whys, fishbone diagram.
• Resolve machine-specific issues: settings, mechanical faults, quality deviations.
• Document problems and solutions for future reference.

• Common issues: improper settings, contamination, mechanical failures.
• Troubleshooting methodology: observe, analyse, test, correct.
• Case studies: blowroom blockages, carding web breaks, spinning ends down.
• Root cause analysis tools: fishbone diagram, fault tree analysis.

Day 11: Practical Application – Simulated Changeover Exercise

Objectives:
• Apply all learned procedures in a simulated changeover scenario.
• Practice changeover from start to finish under time constraints.
• Demonstrate teamwork and communication during changeover.
• Evaluate performance against standards and identify improvement areas.

• Scenario: change from product A to product B (different fibre or count).
• Team roles: operator, quality checker, supervisor.
• Execution: planning, cleaning, setting, sampling, testing.

Day 12: Assessment, Certification, and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Complete formative and summative assessments as per Unit Standard 116323.
• Demonstrate competence in all required outcomes.
• Develop a personal action plan for continuous improvement in changeover.
• Understand the certification process and future learning pathways.

• Assessment: theory test, practical demonstration, portfolio of evidence.

• Certification: SAQA-aligned certificate issuance.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
