Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Woodyard Operations and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the overall structure and purpose of a woodyard.
• Identify key safety hazards and regulations in woodyard operations.
• Describe the roles and responsibilities of woodyard personnel.

Topics:
• Overview of woodyard processes: receiving, storage, handling, and debarking.
• Safety standards (OHS Act, PPE, hazard identification).
• Introduction to woodyard equipment and machinery.
• Basic terminology and process flow diagrams.
• Environmental considerations and waste management.

Day 2: Wood Receiving and Quality Assessment

Objectives:
• Explain methods for receiving wood from various sources.
• Apply techniques for assessing wood quality and moisture content.
• Understand the impact of wood characteristics on downstream processes.

Topics:
• Wood species identification and properties.
• Receiving procedures: weighbridge, sampling, and documentation.
• Quality parameters: density, moisture, bark content, defects.
• Measurement tools and instruments (moisture meters, callipers).
• Record keeping and reporting.

Day 3: Wood Storage and Inventory Management

Objectives:
• Describe different storage methods and their applications.
• Implement inventory control techniques to minimize degradation.
• Manage stock rotation and maintain optimal storage conditions.

Topics:
• Storage methods: dry land, wet storage, and under cover.
• Inventory management systems: FIFO, LIFO, and barcoding.
• Preventing wood degradation: fungal decay, insect infestation, and checking.
• Stockpile management: stacking methods and space utilization.
• Safety in storage areas.

Day 4: Debarking and Chipping Operations

Objectives:
• Explain the principles of debarking and chipping processes.
• Operate debarking and chipping equipment safely and efficiently.
• Monitor process variables to maintain product quality.

• Types of debarkers: drum, ring, and rosser head.
• Chipper types: disc, drum, and re-chippers.
• Process variables: feed rate, knife condition, screen size.
• Quality control: chip size distribution and bark content.
• Troubleshooting common issues.

Day 5: Material Handling and Conveying Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the design and operation of conveying systems.
• Optimize material flow to minimize bottlenecks.
• Perform routine maintenance and inspections on conveyors.

Topics:
• Conveyor types: belt, screw, chain, and pneumatic.
• Transfer points and chute design.
• Speed control and load monitoring.
• Maintenance: belt tracking, lubrication, and wear monitoring.
• Safety features: guards, emergency stops, and interlocks.

Day 6: Process Control and Optimization

Objectives:
• Identify key process variables affecting woodyard efficiency.
• Apply control strategies to optimize throughput and quality.
• Use data analysis to support decision-making.

Topics:
• Key performance indicators: throughput, yield, downtime.
• Control systems: PLCs, SCADA, and sensors.
• Process optimization techniques: bottleneck analysis, lean principles.
• Energy efficiency and waste reduction.
• Data logging and reporting.

Day 7: Integrated Woodyard Management and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Synthesize knowledge from all days to manage woodyard operations.
• Conduct a simulated woodyard audit and improvement plan.
• Demonstrate competence in practical scenarios.

• Woodyard layout and workflow integration.
• Shift handover procedures and communication.
• Emergency response planning.
• Continuous improvement and best practices.
• Review and assessment.

Practicals

24 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential for learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real equipment and scenarios. These sessions develop skills in operating machinery, quality assessment, and troubleshooting under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Wood Quality Assessment Practical — Learners practice measuring wood moisture content, density, and bark content using handheld instruments and visual inspection. (6h)
  • Debarker and Chipper Operation — Under supervision, learners operate a debarker and chipper, adjusting feed rates and monitoring chip quality. (8h)
  • Conveyor System Inspection and Maintenance — Learners conduct a pre-shift inspection of conveyors, identify wear, and perform lubrication and belt tracking adjustments. (6h)
  • Simulated Woodyard Audit — Teams conduct a mock audit of a woodyard area, identifying hazards, inefficiencies, and recommending improvements. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
