Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Environmental Management Tools and Protocols

Objectives:
• Define key environmental management terms and concepts.
• Identify relevant legislation and regulations in South Africa.
• Explain the purpose and scope of environmental management tools and protocols.
• Distinguish between different types of environmental impacts.
• Describe the role of monitoring in environmental management.

• Overview of environmental management systems (EMS).
• South African environmental legislation (NEMA, ECA, etc.).
• Types of environmental impacts (physical, chemical, biological, social).
• Introduction to environmental management tools (EIA, EMP, audits).
• Basic principles of environmental monitoring.
• Case studies of environmental impacts in SA.

Day 2: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Basic Monitoring Techniques

Objectives:
• Explain the EIA process and its components.
• Identify when an EIA is required under SA law.
• Apply basic monitoring techniques for air, water, and soil.
• Use simple sampling methods and field equipment.
• Record and interpret monitoring data accurately.

Topics:
• EIA process: screening, scoping, impact assessment, review.
• Legal requirements for EIAs in South Africa.
• Air quality monitoring: particulate matter, gases.
• Water quality monitoring: pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen.
• Soil sampling and contamination assessment.
• Data recording and basic interpretation.

Day 3: Environmental Management Plans (EMP) and Auditing

Objectives:
• Describe the components of an Environmental Management Plan.
• Develop an EMP for a simple scenario.
• Understand the auditing process and types of audits.
• Conduct a basic environmental compliance audit.
• Identify non-conformances and recommend corrective actions.

• Structure of an EMP: objectives, targets, actions, responsibilities.
• Integrating EMP with ISO 14001.
• Types of audits: compliance, performance, due diligence.
• Audit planning, checklists, and evidence gathering.
• Non-conformance reporting and corrective action plans.

Day 4: Waste Management and Pollution Control Tools

Objectives:
• Apply waste management hierarchy principles.
• Classify hazardous and general waste according to SA regulations.
• Use pollution control tools such as spill response kits.
• Implement waste minimisation strategies.
• Monitor and report waste generation and disposal.

Topics:
• Waste management hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, dispose.
• Hazardous waste classification and storage requirements.
• Spill response protocols and containment equipment.
• Pollution prevention tools: bunding, drip trays, interceptors.
• Waste tracking and documentation (Waste Manifest).
• Case studies: waste management in mining and manufacturing.

Day 5: Biodiversity and Ecological Monitoring Tools

Objectives:
• Identify key biodiversity indicators in South African ecosystems.
• Use ecological monitoring protocols for flora and fauna.
• Apply tools such as vegetation surveys and water quality indices.
• Understand the role of Environmental Management Frameworks (EMFs).
• Interpret ecological data to assess impact.

Topics:
• Biodiversity legislation: NEMBA, protected areas.
• Vegetation survey methods: quadrats, transects.
• Fauna monitoring: camera traps, call counts.
• Water quality indices (SASS, IBI).
• Environmental Management Frameworks and spatial planning.
• Practical: conducting a rapid biodiversity assessment.

Day 6: Incident Response and Emergency Protocols

Objectives:
• Identify types of environmental incidents and emergencies.
• Apply incident command systems and response protocols.
• Use tools like checklists and communication plans.
• Conduct root cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Document and report incidents according to legal requirements.

Topics:
• Types of incidents: spills, fires, releases, non-compliance.
• Incident command structure and roles.
• Emergency response plans and drills.
• Spill response and containment procedures.
• Root cause analysis techniques (5 Whys, fishbone).
• Incident reporting forms and timelines.
• Practical: tabletop exercise for a spill scenario.

Day 7: Integration, Reporting, and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Synthesise tools and protocols into a coherent environmental management system.
• Prepare an environmental performance report.
• Identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
• Apply corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
• Demonstrate competence through a final assessment.

• Integrating EIA, EMP, audits, and monitoring.
• Environmental performance indicators and reporting.
• Continuous improvement: Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA).
• CAPA process and documentation.
• Stakeholder communication and engagement.
• Final assessment: case study analysis and presentation.
• Course review and feedback.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
