Description

This course equips learners with foundational awareness of how human activities impact the natural environment. It promotes responsible behaviour and compliance with environmental legislation in the workplace and community.

Day 1: Introduction to Environmental Awareness and Key Concepts

• Human activities and their environmental impacts: an introduction.
• South African environmental context: current issues and legislation.
• Introduction to Unit Standard 119305: learning outcomes and assessment criteria.

Day 2: Ecosystems and Biodiversity – Understanding Our Natural Heritage

Objectives:
• Describe the structure and function of ecosystems.
• Explain the importance of biodiversity for ecosystem health.
• Identify threats to biodiversity from human activities.
• Discuss conservation strategies relevant to South Africa.

Topics:
• Components of ecosystems: biotic and abiotic factors.
• Energy flow and nutrient cycles.
• Biodiversity: definition, levels, and value.
• Human impacts on biodiversity: habitat destruction, overexploitation, invasive species.
• Conservation approaches: protected areas, community-based conservation, legislation.

Day 3: Pollution – Sources, Effects, and Management

Objectives:
• Identify major types of pollution (air, water, soil, noise).
• Explain sources and environmental effects of each pollution type.
• Describe pollution management and control measures.
• Relate pollution issues to South African contexts.

• Air pollution: sources (industry, vehicles) and effects (health, climate).
• Water pollution: point and non-point sources, eutrophication, impacts on aquatic life.
• Soil pollution: agricultural chemicals, waste disposal, land degradation.
• Noise pollution: sources and effects on wildlife and humans.
• Pollution control: regulations, cleaner production, waste management.

Day 4: Resource Use and Sustainability – Energy, Water, and Materials

• Differentiate between renewable and non-renewable resources.
• Analyze patterns of energy and water consumption in South Africa.
• Explain the concept of sustainable resource management.
• Identify strategies for reducing resource use and waste.

Day 7: Environmental Legislation and Policy in South Africa

Objectives:
• Identify key environmental laws and regulations in South Africa.
• Explain the role of government agencies in environmental management.
• Understand the importance of compliance and enforcement.
• Apply legal principles to real-world scenarios.

• Overview of environmental law: NEMA, NWA, NEMBA, NEMWA.
• Key principles: polluter pays, precautionary principle, sustainable development.
• Regulatory bodies: DEA, DWS, provincial departments, municipalities.
• Environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and authorisations.
• Compliance and enforcement: penalties, audits, legal liability.
• Case studies: legal cases and environmental disputes.

Day 8: Social and Economic Dimensions of Environmental Issues

Objectives:
• Analyze the social impacts of environmental degradation.
• Discuss the relationship between poverty, development, and the environment.
• Evaluate economic instruments for environmental management.
• Explore the role of communities and stakeholders in environmental action.

Topics:
• Environmental justice: disproportionate impacts on vulnerable groups.

Day 9: Integration and Practical Application – Becoming an Environmental Champion

Objectives:
• Synthesize knowledge from all days to assess environmental impacts.
• Develop a personal action plan to reduce environmental footprint.
• Demonstrate ability to communicate environmental awareness to others.
• Prepare for assessment against Unit Standard 119305.

• Group activity: environmental impact assessment of a local scenario.
• Developing a personal environmental action plan.
• Effective communication: presenting environmental issues to diverse audiences.
• Role of individuals in promoting sustainability.
• Review of key concepts and assessment preparation.
• Final assessment: written and practical tasks.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
