This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to handle and dispose of waste safely and in compliance with relevant legislation. Participants will learn to identify different waste types, apply correct disposal procedures, and minimise environmental impact. The training ensures adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act and environmental regulations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Waste Management and Legal Framework

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of proper waste handling and disposal.
• Identify key South African legislation governing waste management.
• Recognise the roles and responsibilities of individuals and organisations.
• Define different waste categories and their characteristics.

• Overview of waste management in South Africa
• National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEMWA)
• Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) requirements
• Types of waste: general, hazardous, healthcare, and recyclable
• Environmental and health impacts of improper waste disposal
• Roles of waste generators, transporters, and disposal facilities

Day 2: Waste Classification and Segregation

Objectives:
• Classify waste according to SANS 10248 and SANS 10234.
• Apply correct segregation methods for different waste streams.
• Understand colour-coding and labelling requirements.
• Demonstrate proper waste container selection and placement.

• SANS 10248: Classification of hazardous waste
• SANS 10234: Storage of hazardous waste
• Segregation principles: general, hazardous, infectious, and recyclable

Day 3: Safe Handling and Storage of Waste

Objectives:
• Apply safe handling techniques to prevent spills and exposure.
• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Implement correct storage methods for various waste types.
• Respond to minor spills and emergencies.

• Manual handling techniques and ergonomics
• PPE selection and use for waste handling
• Storage requirements: ventilation, containment, and security
• Spill response procedures and spill kits
• Emergency contacts and reporting protocols

Day 4: Transportation and On-Site Movement of Waste

Objectives:
• Understand legal requirements for waste transportation.
• Prepare waste for transport: packaging, labelling, and documentation.
• Implement safe on-site waste movement procedures.
• Complete waste transfer notes and manifests.

Day 5: Hazardous Waste Management

• Identify hazardous waste types and associated risks.
• Apply specific handling and disposal protocols for hazardous waste.
• Understand the hierarchy of waste management: reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, treat, dispose.
• Implement control measures for hazardous waste.

• Hazardous waste classification and health hazards
• Specific handling for flammable, toxic, corrosive, and reactive waste
• Treatment options: neutralisation, incineration, stabilisation
• Hazardous waste disposal facilities: landfill, treatment, and incineration
• Waste minimisation strategies
• Case studies: hazardous waste incidents

Day 6: Healthcare and Infectious Waste Management

Objectives:
• Recognise healthcare waste categories and risks.
• Implement segregation and handling protocols for healthcare waste.
• Understand treatment and disposal methods for infectious waste.
• Comply with relevant healthcare waste regulations.

• Healthcare waste categories: infectious, pathological, sharps, pharmaceutical

• Sharps management and disposal
• Treatment technologies: autoclaving, incineration, chemical disinfection

Day 7: Waste Treatment and Disposal Methods

Objectives:
• Describe various waste treatment technologies.
• Understand landfill design, operation, and environmental controls.
• Evaluate alternative disposal methods: incineration, composting, recycling.
• Recognise the importance of waste-to-energy options.

• Landfill classification and liner systems
• Leachate and gas management
• Incineration: types, emissions, and ash disposal
• Biological treatment: composting and anaerobic digestion
• Recycling processes and material recovery facilities

Day 8: Environmental Management and Monitoring

• Understand environmental monitoring requirements for waste facilities.
• Implement pollution prevention measures.
• Conduct waste audits and generate reports.
• Apply continuous improvement principles to waste management.

Day 9: Integrated Waste Management and Assessment

• Demonstrate competence through practical assessment.
• Review course content and address gaps.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
