SAQA US 119306 | NQF 1 | Credits 10 | Duration 7 Days
From $1,523 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to identify, group, use, and care for materials that may impact health and the environment. Participants will learn to recognise hazardous substances, apply safe handling procedures, and implement proper disposal methods to minimise risks in the workplace.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and classify materials that can impact health and the environment according to relevant legislation and workplace procedures.
  • Apply safe handling, storage, and transportation practices for hazardous materials to prevent exposure and environmental harm.
  • Demonstrate correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency response procedures for spills or accidents.
  • Evaluate material safety data sheets (MSDS) and labels to determine risks and required precautions.
  • Implement waste management and disposal methods that comply with environmental regulations.
  • Monitor and report potential health and environmental hazards associated with material use.

Target Audience

This course is designed for employees, supervisors, and safety representatives who work with or around hazardous materials in industrial, laboratory, or general workplace settings.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Objectives:
• Define key terms related to hazardous materials and environmental health.
• Identify common hazardous materials in the workplace and their potential impacts.
• Explain the legal framework for handling hazardous materials in South Africa.
• Understand the role of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).

Topics:
• Overview of hazardous materials: definitions and classifications.
• Health and environmental impacts of common hazardous substances.
• South African legislation: OHS Act, NEM:AQA, and relevant regulations.
• Introduction to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and their components.
• Group responsibilities in recognising and reporting hazards.

Day 2: Recognition and Identification of Hazardous Materials

Objectives:
• Identify hazardous materials using labels, symbols, and colour codes.
• Interpret hazard communication systems (GHS, SANS).
• Recognise signs of hazardous material exposure in the environment.
• Conduct basic visual inspections for potential hazards.

Topics:
• Globally Harmonized System (GHS) pictograms and hazard statements.
• South African National Standards (SANS) for hazard labelling.
• Colour coding and signage for hazardous areas and storage.
• Recognising environmental contamination: spills, odours, discolouration.
• Practical exercise: identifying hazards from sample labels and scenarios.

Day 3: Safe Handling and Storage of Hazardous Materials

Objectives:
• Apply safe handling techniques for various hazardous materials.
• Implement proper storage procedures to minimise risks.
• Understand compatibility and segregation requirements.
• Demonstrate correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Topics:
• Safe handling practices: lifting, pouring, and transferring.
• Storage requirements: ventilation, temperature, and containment.
• Segregation of incompatible materials (e.g., oxidisers vs flammables).
• Selection and use of appropriate PPE (gloves, goggles, respirators).
• Spill prevention measures and secondary containment.
• Practical exercise: simulating safe storage arrangement.

Day 4: Spill Response and Emergency Procedures

Objectives:
• Describe emergency procedures for hazardous material spills.
• Use spill kits and containment equipment correctly.

• Reflect on continuous improvement and best practices.

Topics:
• Integrated simulation: from recognition to disposal.
• Group project: creating a hazardous material management plan.
• Written assessment covering all unit standard outcomes.
• Practical assessment: handling, spill response, PPE use.
• Feedback session and identification of areas for improvement.
• Course evaluation and certification information.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
