Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Hand Tools and Basic Equipment

Objectives:
• Identify common hand tools and basic equipment used in environmental contexts.
• Explain the importance of selecting the correct tool for specific tasks.
• Demonstrate safe handling and storage practices for hand tools.
• Describe the environmental impact of improper tool use.
• Understand the principles of tool maintenance for longevity and safety.

Topics:
• Overview of hand tools: spades, forks, pruners, loppers, saws, and trowels.
• Basic equipment: wheelbarrows, watering cans, buckets, and measuring tools.
• Tool selection criteria based on task requirements and environmental conditions.
• Safety precautions: personal protective equipment (PPE) and hazard awareness.
• Proper storage: cleaning, drying, and organising tools to prevent damage and accidents.
• Environmental considerations: reducing waste through tool care and responsible disposal.
• Introduction to tool maintenance: sharpening, oiling, and tightening handles.

Day 2: Safe Use and Care of Tools in Environmental Work

Objectives:
• Apply correct techniques for using hand tools in soil preparation, planting, and maintenance.
• Perform routine care and minor repairs on common hand tools.
• Identify and mitigate risks associated with tool use in outdoor environments.
• Implement waste reduction practices during tool use and maintenance.
• Demonstrate proper disposal or recycling of worn-out tools and materials.

• Techniques for digging, cutting, pruning, and cultivating with hand tools.
• Ergonomic practices to prevent strain and injury during prolonged use.
• Tool care: cleaning after use, rust prevention, and blade sharpening.
• Basic repairs: replacing handles, tightening fasteners, and dressing edges.
• Risk assessment: weather conditions, terrain, and biological hazards.
• Environmental stewardship: minimising soil compaction and damage to vegetation.
• Disposal methods: recycling metal parts, composting wooden handles, and proper waste management.

Day 3: Advanced Applications and Integration

Objectives:
• Plan and execute a small environmental project using appropriate tools and equipment.
• Evaluate tool performance and make adjustments for efficiency and safety.
• Apply sustainable practices in tool selection, use, and care.
• Demonstrate teamwork and communication while using tools in a group setting.
• Reflect on learning and create a personal tool maintenance schedule.

• Project planning: selecting tools for site preparation, planting, and mulching.
• Practical exercise: implementing a restoration or landscaping task.
• Tool efficiency: assessing wear and tear, and optimising cutting angles.
• Group dynamics: coordinating tasks and sharing equipment safely.
• Sustainable toolkit: choosing durable, repairable tools over disposable ones.
• Creating a maintenance log: scheduling inspections, cleaning, and repairs.
• Review of unit standard outcomes and assessment preparation.

Practicals

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
