This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to safely work with, use, and care for materials and resources that may impact health and the environment. It focuses on identifying hazards, applying control measures, and ensuring responsible disposal practices in line with South African regulatory requirements.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Materials and Resources Impacting Health and Environment

Objectives:
• Understand the scope of materials and resources in the workplace
• Identify potential health and environmental impacts of common materials
• Recognize regulatory frameworks and standards in South Africa
• Define key terminology related to hazardous substances

Topics:
• Overview of materials and resources: types and uses
• Introduction to health and environmental impacts
• South African legislation: OHSA, NEMA, and relevant SANS standards
• Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and their role
• Case studies: real-world examples of material impacts

Day 2: Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Objectives:
• Classify hazardous materials according to GHS criteria
• Conduct a basic risk assessment for material handling
• Interpret hazard communication symbols and labels
• Apply the hierarchy of controls to mitigate risks

Topics:
• Globally Harmonized System (GHS) classification
• Hazard identification methods (e.g., checklists, inspections)
• Risk assessment process: likelihood and severity
• Hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, PPE
• Practical exercise: assessing a workplace scenario

Day 3: Safe Handling and Storage of Hazardous Materials

Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct procedures for handling hazardous substances
• Implement safe storage practices to prevent incidents
• Understand compatibility and segregation requirements
• Apply spill response and emergency procedures

Topics:
• Safe handling techniques: manual handling, transfer, and use
• Storage requirements: ventilation, temperature, containment
• Incompatible materials: segregation guidelines
• Spill response: containment, cleanup, and disposal
• Emergency procedures: first aid, fire, and evacuation

Day 4: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Hygiene Practices

Objectives:
• Select appropriate PPE for different material hazards
• Inspect, maintain, and correctly use PPE
• Understand the importance of personal hygiene in preventing exposure
• Recognize limitations of PPE and need for other controls

Topics:
• Types of PPE: respiratory, skin, eye, hearing protection
• Selection criteria based on hazard and task
• PPE inspection, maintenance, and replacement schedules
• Good hygiene practices: handwashing, decontamination, no eating/drinking
• Practical session: PPE donning and doffing

Day 5: Environmental Impact and Waste Management

Objectives:
• Identify environmental pathways and receptors (air, water, soil)
• Apply principles of waste minimization and management
• Understand disposal requirements for hazardous waste
• Recognize the role of environmental management systems (EMS)

Topics:
• Environmental fate of materials: persistence, bioaccumulation
• Waste hierarchy: reduce, reuse, recycle, recover, dispose
• Hazardous waste classification and disposal regulations
• Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001)
• Case study: waste management at a South African facility

Day 6: Monitoring, Reporting, and Record-Keeping

Objectives:
• Conduct workplace monitoring for exposure (air, surface, noise)
• Complete incident reports and exposure records
• Understand the importance of health surveillance
• Maintain documentation for compliance and audits

Topics:
• Exposure monitoring methods and equipment
• Air sampling, noise dosimetry, and biological monitoring
• Incident reporting procedures and forms
• Health surveillance: medicals, biological exposure indices
• Record-keeping requirements and retention periods

Day 7: Integration, Review, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Synthesize knowledge into a comprehensive material management plan
• Evaluate case studies and apply corrective actions
• Demonstrate competence through practical and written assessment
• Develop a personal action plan for workplace implementation

Topics:
• Integration exercise: creating a material handling SOP
• Review of key concepts and Q&A
• Practical assessment: risk assessment and PPE selection
• Written assessment: multiple choice and scenario-based questions
• Action planning: implementing learnings in own workplace

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
